Well done Cav

Mint's picture

In a weekend of dreadful news, how great to see Marc Cavendish winning the green jersey at the Tour de France, surely Sports Personality of the Year is his this year?
It's been a terrific tour, with a worthy winner which went all the way to the wire. One can only imagine how more thrilling it would have been if Contador hadn't lost all that time in the first few days?
Quick mention for Thomas and Swift, British riders who surely have a bright future, British cycling has come on a long way in the last few years, it wasn't that long ago when we would have have been lucky to have 1 rider in the tour! The days of Boardman or Millar being our only hope for some kind of glory are becoming a very distant memory.
Viva le Tour.

And after Cadel Evans'

overall win I guess we won't be hearing too much more about "sitting down sports" ;-)

Mark Cavendish

Tremendous to see him take the maillot vert. Is SPOTY a public vote? If so I'll definitely vote for him. Lewis Hamilton put in a sterling drive too today, making it a great day for British sport.

And Amir Khan

disposed of Zab Judah with the precision of a surgeon who, um, hurts people rather than makes them well. And on Friday eve there was Mo Farah, as fleet of foot as a hare in early March. Frankly, I find it a shame that the football season's fast upon us.

Agreed. It was good to see him nail it with such style

on the Champs Elysees as well.

The last three years have given us a picture of a team working at the peak of 'teaminess' to deliver Cavendish to that last 200m.

Big kudos to Mark Renshaw as well. The moment when Renshaw takes over the lead-out with 500-400m to go is one of the most exciting in sport.

One of the best

The lack of a dominating figure like Armstrong or Indurain and the freedom from the shadow of doping made it a great, open tour.

Chapeau to Evans and Cavendish, but the man who made it such a great tour for me was Thomas Voeckler. 10 days in yellow and at the start of every stage when he was leading he was expected to lose it. But he spent out every last joule of energy to keep it. The climb up the Galabier was epic. He just couldn't hang in on Alp d'Huez, having been caught in two minds between going in solo pursuit of Contador or waiting for the Evans group, he made the wrong choice and kept up the solo pursuit. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Double chapeau Thomas.

Sports Personality Of The Year

You might well be right.

My initial knee-jerk was to say "What rubbish, it'll be Rory McIlroy or Darren Clarke" but, of course, they're both golfers. All the golf fans will vote for one or the other. Split vote. ALL the cycling fans, however, (and there's a lot of them, as we know) will vote for Cav.

It was an extraordinary tour

Really old fashioned in many ways, going back to the time before Armstrong and Indurain, where the winner really has to race for three weeks and not just six mountain stages and two time trials.
Cadel Evans taking two minutes out of Andy Schleck on the Galibier, turning a big massive gear and riding on the drops was extraordinary TV.
Tommy V was magnificent, I have loved his devil-may-care-attack-anywhere attitude for years and now he has Jeremy Roy for company, the French will be in cochon heaven.
Also, given how close Brad Wiggins has been to Cadel in recent races, he really must be kicking himself. If he had been there, or thereabouts, as I think he probably would have been (given the SRM readings of the lead contenders) then he would have had a shout on the TT yesterday. He had blinder on the same course in the Duaphiné, despite the rain that day.
But it really is all about Cavendish. Britain really is in need of real sporting heroes in the athletic sports since the decline of Paula Radcliffe, and Cav is the genuine article.
Bright, funny, articulate, generous and utterly ruthless. Stop worshipping the false gods of football and rugby, you have your man. Celebrate him because he is, genuinely, a once in a generation talent. And the Worlds course suits him.

And Cavendish

Is the first man ever to take three on the bounce on the Champs Elysees.
He is a legend. Please, Brits, herald him as such. Cherish him.

To my discredit, I bet against him

I really thought the new intermediate points rules would play against him, and went with another sprinter in my TDF fantasy league. I won't make that mistake next year, that last lead-out and sprint was textbook and immaculate.

Intrigued to hear...

... there are TdF fantasy leagues. I'll be looking that up next year.
