Welcome to slap bass heaven
Posted by Uncle Wheaty on 24 July 2009 - 6:37pm.
I've just listened to Southern Freeez on the Spotify playlist and I had forgotten how good it is and how the world needs more slap bass.
Apart from Level 42 where else should I go to get another fix?

Now that is extremely funny
but has anyone else noticed how the musical targets the self-confessed 'classical only' Iannucci chooses to lampoon as, presumably, the epitome of naff, have in fact not been thought of as naff for, oh I don't know, decades?
*Kate Bush
*Paul McCartney
*Abba
*Crowded House
Admittedly, I'm struggling somewhat with Level 42, but I for one am not remotely ashamed to admit my liking for The Chant Has Begun, The Chinese Way ('who knows what they know' - the inscrutable swine!), Sun Goes Down, Something About You or Leaving Me Now. As far as I know, they never claimed to be the new Steely Dan - just the sound of a suburban weekend, and what's wrong with that?
Not really a recommendation
But didn't the guy in Spandau Ballet play slap bass?
Larry Graham invented the technique
(or so he claims)
It's not on YouTube but...
...the studio recording of 'Bonin' In The Boneyard' by Fishbone ought to give you a pretty decent fix.
Aha, here is is on ver 'Fy:

Stanley Clarke was also fond of the occasional 'b-danggg'
And, of course, Mark King
of 'ver 42' is a genuinely fine slap 'n' twang player
LED-lit fretboard...
...brilliant!
Try this...
...always one of my favourite Michael Jackson tracks.
Louis Johnson
Here's another example of Quincy Jones + Louis Johnson goodness although you have to wait until the 2:41 mark for the slap - no hardship really!
The Reddings
Otis's sons - not sure what became of them after this album, which I first heard at a hi-fi show in Harrogate. It was used to demonstrate the first Pink Triangle turntable. I did rush out and buy the album which WAS in my price range.
Here's Aussie/Austrian Harry Brus..
..an aquaintance of mine, and as good as anyone.
Try this
An entire blog dedicated to slap. Complete with some rather unofficial downloads...
