Welcome back, my friends, to the site that never ends

What's new? Well, now you can post your own ideas, start your own blog, include your own links and even embed YouTube clips.

What's the same? The high standard of banter and the well-informed, well-mannered exchange of amusement, erudition and entertainment. Please dive right in by registering and consulting the FAQ for clarification. If you have any problem with getting your email confirmation, we suggest you check your junk mail filter or get in touch.

You could help us out by telling us which acts have caught your fancy on our Now Hear This CDs this year. We're hoping to compile a "best-of" for our January issue.

Once posterOur latest podcast has been put together in association with the movie "Once" and Icon Films and there's an opportunity to win a very fine Gibson Epiphone guitar here. Over at the blog debate is already raging about Bob Dylan's interest in ponies while if you go here you can read Rob Fitzpatrick's piece about Maceo Parker, which just failed to make it into the current issue.

The aforesaid, which has Bruce Springsteen on the cover, Ricky Gervais on the inside and comes with a CD featuring Steve Earle, The Pearlfishers, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. John Fogerty, Jose Gonzalez and more, will be with subscribers any moment now and goes on sale, as ever, on the second Thursday of the month. And if you need a little background music while you're browsing, the new Radio Word show is streaming here.

Postal Strike

Oh no it wont...coz the Postman Pats of this land are rising up against there superiors and going ahead with the proposed vendetta. It's actually been in effect for about a week, so no Word magazine for the faithful suscribers.

Postal Strike

I'll be buying mine as soon as I see one in the shops. Can't wait for the subscription copy to arrive. I've alread bought the Radio Times and New Statesman this week for the same reason. Magazine publishers rejoice!

Congrats

Word Guys and Gals!At the risk of sounding mealy-mouthed, big congratulations from this technophobe. The site looks so much better. And even more fun. I've often wondered how to inflict more You Tube and other nonsense on the world. Still don't understand what a HTML tag is, but life's too short for this: in fact, it's becoming too short for most things. As I haven't started my own blog yet, may I state here that Chuck Prophet is God and his new album SOAP AND WATER is my candidate for most overlooked CD of the year.

Kerry Shale | 10 October 2007 - 7:03pm

Congrats etc

Agree heartily re both new website and 'Soap & Water'  One point though, he's not God, he's just a Prophet, the clue is in the name. Does this mean I'm Jewish?

Steven C | 10 October 2007 - 7:09pm

Depends

That Depends, StevenC. What exactly does the "C" stand for?
May the Power of Chuck be with you, by the way.

A circumcision joke? Ha!

A circumcision joke? Ha! Have you noticed that there are way too many Stevens, Stephens and Steves on this site? It must have been a big early 60's favourite, but I'm not sure who that influential Seminal Steve (so to speak) actually was.

Sky TV Channel 271...

....is now a channel called Mainstreet. Their programme schedule is quite bizarre and they seem to repeat some things on a weekly basis HOWEVER every night at around 9pm they show classic footage from the Old Grey Whistle Test. Every one I've seen so far (some 3 times) is an In Concert special. So far this week we've had Hall & Oates and Manhattan Transfer, and according to today's Sky Guide, at 9pm tonight it's Ry Cooder. Tune in, Turn on.

Freddie Owen | 11 October 2007 - 8:28am

Ry Cooder

I was at that show, I think.

Never mind "Control" & "I'm Not There"...

In the great tradition of music biopics John C. Reilly plays the great Dewey Cox in the forthcoming Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

Yes, that is Jack White as Elvis. Walk hard.

What the hell...?

Nice new look to the site

Nice new look to the site and the ghosts of the old site still haunts us. At last, the font is bigger as well!!

Frank Sinatra voice transplant

Great to see Mark Ellen praising the Peter Cook/Chris Morris "Why Bother?" CD. Wonderful to listen to two of the greatest satirists toying with each other for our (and their own) amusement.

I did notice that there is a track on the Two Lone Swordsmen album "A Virus With Shoes" entitled 'Cloned Christ On A Hover Donkey (Be Thankful)' - which is inspired by the Peter Cook/Chris Morris album.

Trainspotter-ish, I know - thought I'd just mention it in passing...

Now Hear This Covers

Liking the new site - much nicer looking, and loads of cool new toys :)

However I have a couple of small suggestions regarding the CD cover downloads:

  1. Could we have larger CD cover images please? I (and I suspect quite a few others) like to have my iTunes maximised on my PC screen in Cover Flow mode, and when blown up from 175 pixels wide to 1000 they look terrible...
  2. An archive of covers would be nice, as I missed downloading a few of them and thus have some gaps!

Love the magazine - keep it up!

Postal strike aftermath

Well it's Thursday the 18th and my copy still hasn't arrived - am I the only one?

Azeem | 18 October 2007 - 3:40pm

You're not alone

Nor me too, neither.

Paul Vincent | 19 October 2007 - 7:13am

Subs copies not arrived?

We were assured by Royal Mail that any backlog from the strike should have been cleared by today. If you still haven't got yours please email jerry@developmenthell.co.uk and we'll get replacement copies to you.

Now Hear This - November

Excellent CD this month - the best in ages. At least four of the tracks - Roisin Murphy, Steve Earle, Plant/Krauss, the Dap Kings - make me want to check out the LP, and the Pearlfishers are a happy new discovery.
