Evie Wonder: Evie Sands is a Lost Goddess Of Pop. Look at her original 'I Can't Let Go' and marvel. She had the voice, the looks, the moves and the songs. (Angel Of The Morning, Take Me For A Little While ). What's more, she still performs. So, why didn't she make it big? Just read The Curse of Evie Sands for the links to everything you need to know. Her Estate Of Mind & Take Me albums are on Amazon.
Travel: It's been a bit of a week. Fraser's been to Paris via California. I think I've been as far as Hammersmith. Means nothing to Hank Snow, because he's been everywhere.
Forgotten Pop: Rosie Vela & Magic Smile. Can't imagine what made Becker & Fagen get involved.
Musicianship: The ukulele resurgence continues via the Word podcasts. If you have a leaning towards ball-juggling Chinese uke players, Ming & Toy may be just the job.
Old Codger: George Melly, The Stranglers & Lew Lewis. Thought you might like to hear it.
News: Here's a very relaxed James Brown. He looks good, he feels good...and he smells good.

Top Choice - Old Codger

I've always loved this Stranglers track - a real B Side baby which also features the thumping tune 'Tank'

I'm still not clear what 'shave 'em dry' means , but perhaps it's best to not know.

oh I see...

Well, neither does anyone. So I've just looked it up.
Here's a Language of Jazz (Neil Powell) definition from a Google Book search;
"...the term shave 'em dry
(an expression of intercourse without preliminary love-making) was as favoured amongst female singers as the 'sweet petunia' was amongst male singers"

Ma Rainey recorded a song of the same name in 1924 & Lucille Bogan also had a few naughty songs containing the phrase.
There. That'll break the ice during an awkward moment at the office party next month.

Yikes !!

I'd always thought it was to do with sideburns and cut throat razors - and have often have been tempted to ask my barber to 'shave em dry'. Phew!!!! Thanks for the tip off.

The great Evie Sands

One of my most treasured 45s is Picture Me Gone by the great Evie Sands.
You can listen to it here: http://www.soulclub.org/cgi-bin/alpha?s=E
Scroll down the list 'til you find it, click to download. Crap quality, I'm afraid, but what the hell. Madeline Bell did a version of this song too (it's on YouTube) but it's not a patch on Evie's.
The oddly under-rated Hollies had great taste in covers.

p.s. soulclub.org is a treasure trove. Scratchy old singles on the whole but good for dipping into to unearth long-forgotten gems.

Say Colonel

Do you know where I can get hold of 'I Can't Let Go' in an i-Tunes/i-Pod favoured format; all Evie's available output appears to mislay this classic track?
