Wedding day

My mate is getting married next Saturday, and as he is a muso has asked others to do a song at the evening do on a kind of "Open mic" basis. My mind has gone blank....anyone suggest a suitable number for a wedding day which can be performed on acoustic guitar? They are not super romantic, so no "Wonderful tonight" etc.

Ta!

sounds dreadful

what's with people getting their friends to do stuff at weddings can't they have a disco and some ham sandwiches and let everyone have a natter and the odd drink in peace?

How about this?

My bluegrass and blues mates

did a fine arrangement of "Here There And Everywhere" when Mrs Fox and I tied the knot.
Then we got stuck into a barrel of Bath Ales' "Gem" and before long you could hear me sat in the corner trying to remember the opening chords to "Stairway"...

Poor Boy.....

....from Steve Earle's "I Feel Alright" album.

I find it always gets feet tapping when I play it at parties on acoustic.

It's a boy meets girl(or maybe boy would like to meet girl)song with a simple rockabilly shuffle.

RT

Surely he must have one you can do.

paul beard | 23 August 2008 - 6:31pm

Yes!

'Dimming of the Day'?

Although not sure if it needs a female voice to work. Also if RT, presumably could also be a bastard to play?

Specs_Beard | 23 August 2008 - 6:33pm

Good point

lots of his are a bit dark - I was listening to "Read about love" yesterday and remarked to myself how extreme the lyrics are - not one for a wedding. But "Vincent Black Lightning" might be a good one. Good thought.

'Brickbat'

by Billy Bragg was the song that first popped into my head when I saw this question.

Honest, romantic, unsentimental.

It's on his 'William Bloke' album.

Guy Clark

His song Anyhow I Love You is simple and says what needs to be said. You can find it on Texas Cookin'.

Brave but worth a punt

Think this is just spot on and very underrated.

only if he wears a cossacks

only if he wears a cossacks hat surley....

Chris G | 24 August 2008 - 7:59am

Video is quite, quite dodgy

but it was the only version I could find

Lee Rimmer | 24 August 2008 - 12:00pm

Who is it?

I don't know it - who is it?

Twangothan | 24 August 2008 - 12:28pm

It's

Craig Armstrong with Steven Lindsay. Of the As If To Nothing album. Also worth having a listen to Valentine by Steven Lindsay (we had it as our first dance such was its romance!).

One to Avoid

Years ago a friend employed a singer with a guitar at his wedding. All was well with the official set (pre-disco/sandwiches) trouble was someone encouraged the chap who was considerably refreshed by this time to do a little reprise post-disco. Cue an anguished, empassioned version of Amsterdam (I thought it was a Bowie track but google tell me the original was by Jacques Brel). The sight of several Aunties over from Ireland visibly blanching as he roared out the line about the whores of Amsterdam and the nervous applause at the end has lived with me ever since. Be warned.

RT

This is a not dark RT song which is lovely...

Old Thames Side
Appears on Front Parlour Ballads (2005)

As I was walking down by old Thames side
Well my foot and my heart seemed to falter
For there you were standing by Custom House Landing
Like Venus risen out of the water

CHORUS
And they’ll say it’s because I’m a fool in love
That I swear there’s no beauty before you
But those that deny or think that I lie
Well those are the ones never saw you

O there never was anyone perfect as you
As you stood there and smiled to greet me
And I looked for a phrase to capture your ways
But that’s a task will always defeat me

Alternatively, I reckon Happy Together by The Turtles would work acoustically - slow it down a bit and it should be a treat.

Em | 24 August 2008 - 3:54pm

Both excellent

Great ideas Em - I like the idea of "Happy together". And the RT one I am listening to on the iPod as I type!

Twangothan | 24 August 2008 - 4:16pm

You tube

Doncha love it! According to a post there these are the chords:

Dropped D tuning; chords are D A fis minor G A
chorus D Dsus4 G D fis minor G a minor G D

Don't Marry Her...

...Have Me.
It did the trick at our wedding. Mrs Skirky in full big white dress regalia and everything. Yes, we did the single version.

skirky | 25 August 2008 - 1:36am

Nick Drake

Northern Sky. Bloody lovely.

risles | 26 August 2008 - 10:03am

I concur....

with my other half. It is indeed a lovely song for a wedding. Busy then? ;)

A Man is in Love

By the Waterboys - I was persuaded to sing it to start friend's wedding reception a few years back. Nice and simple, which is good because I had to teach the band it 5 minutes before we started.
