Walk the Walk

I've somewhat bravely/foolishly signed up for the full 2008 Edinburgh Moonwalk (all 26.2 miles of it) on 14 June. (Let this be a lesson to those of you who frequent pubs that alcohol makes you agree to anything!)

Anyway I need YOUR help. I plan to have my MP3 player with me. What I need are recommendations of songs that would be great to walk to! And what should I be listening to when I cross the finishing line?

When I first...

...had a mobile music player with the headphones and all, Soul Survivor by The Rolling Stones had me fiddling up high with the marvels of the volume control and trying very hard not to walk across Blackfriars Bridge like Mike Jagger would on a stage-wide- -stadium-trek. Or for a pounding, rousing, get-you-over-the-line finish, Dr Feelgood's Roxette.
Maybe not 'Search for the Hero' or 'Simply the Best', though.

Dr Feelgood

Phillip, as an Essex boy a long way from home can I commend your choice.

Walking To New Orleans

by Fats Domino on repeat for the whole 26 miles. Actually, I ought not to post the link, but try Bob Dylan's 'Walking' and 'Shoes' radio shows.

You mean you had to ask?

Edinburgh? Clearly it has to be 500 miles from those scions of Leith, the Proclaimers

Rip it up...and start again.

Foolish? No no no...

Have you done the Moonwalk before? You're going to love it. I did it a couple of years back and I have to tell you, it was fantastic, one of the most memorable nights of my life.

Are you walking with friends? To be honest, I'd recommend nattering and enjoying the company, rather than listening to music. Although music is one of the most important things in my life, it could distance you from an event like that, whenactually part of the joy is being part of a group. Plus there should be lots of support all the way round, and you want to hear the crowds cheering you on!

Anyway, having said my piece, if you do want to retreat into your headphones round the route... the Arctic Monkeys are splendid for a burst of energy.

And good luck! As I say though, I'm confident that you're going to have a brilliant time... just make sure there's someone nice to drive you home at the end of the route, rub your aching shoulders, run you a hot bath and make you a nice cup of tea. You'll need it!!

First timer

Thanks, first time I've stuck my head above this particular parapet. I think the music will serve it's purpose around the middle of the walk. I'll certainly need all the support I can get towards the end. I'm walking with a colleague and we've done 12 miles in 3 hours a week ago so we're making progress. I could swear that it was uphill all the way there and uphill all the way back! Haven't got into the chilly monkeys yet but will give them a go.
