Waiting is the hardest part
What are the longest gaps between albums?
I was thinking about this last night. Big bands seem to make an album on average every three years nowadays, I guess due to the 18 month promotion schedule. The fuss over The Stone Roses taking five years to make an album now seems rather quaint.
But who are the real idle bastards these days?

Vashti Bunyan
Just Another Diamond Day - 1970
Lookaftering - 2005
That's 35 years, surely a record.
What about the gap between the recording and the release?
I gather both Bambu, the 2nd from Dennis Wilson, and the second Fotheringay album are both expected this summer, with both Mr Wilson and Sandy dead these last 25 and 30 years respectively.
Bambu
Most of the Bambu tracks have been around on bootlegs for ages and given that he never actually finished it, I suspect they will appear on the second cd of Pacific Ocean Blue..which is well worth a purchase!
Kate Bush
The Red Shoes - 1993
Aerial - 2005
At least she had the
At least she had the courtesy to make it a double CD. ;)
and now you can pick it up
for about £3.
I'd say EMI love her for it.
And...
it's a masterpiece. Her finest album, according to these here ears.
Mississippi John Hurt
First recording 1928 and then nothing until 1963. whatever Ms Bunyan was up to between her records, I'll wager she wasn't sharecropping...
Portishead
11 years to do 44 minutes of music. 4 minutes a year, and quite a lot of it doesn't sound very good to me, either. Ho hum.
Observer
I read an interview with them in the Observer and they said they bought thousands of CDs and couldn't find any with grooves, "beats" or other ideas to purloin. Probably why it took so long.
don't the blue nile
take ages to come up with new stuff?
Mary Margaret O'Hara
I think she did a Christmas EP after Miss America, which was c.1984, but since then nothing.
I was going to add MMOH here,
but she has produced new work, just not under her own name.
She did the soundtrack songs and music for the movie "Apartment Hunting" after the Chrimbo EP, and in the intervening years (decades!) has also done vocal duties on several albums by The Henrys.
All the same, a new full album of the quality of Miss America would be very, very welcome, and it would give all the silly little girl singer songwriter newbies something to think about.
The Who...
...24 years between 'It's Hard' and 'Endless Wire'. Admittedly, they were only sporadically active in the 80s and 90s, and John Entwistle died in this period. Nevertheless, it sure wasn't worth the wait, in my opinion- it still hasn't really grown on me.
It hasn't grown on me either
and I think it's because The Ooo and I are old farts these days, not pill-poppin' striplings like we were when we didn't want to get fooled again.
Blue Nile
Always take forever
How long?
How long has it been since the last Guns 'n' Roses album?
(All together now: "Not long enough!")
Albums that will never be released don't count.
Does *anyone* believe it will ever see the light of day? Even Axl Rose has suggested waiting for the second coming might be a better bet. There's a better chance that a new Smiths album will see the light of day before Chinese Democracy appears.
Cohen / Eagles
Leonard Cohen
1992 The Future
(Presumably the future when he doesn't release records.)
2001 Ten New Songs
(Because he was skint.)
Still, whatever the reason it's fantastic to have you back sir!
Eagles latest effort, that must be about 30 years?
Eagles
I wouldn't have had any difficulty waiting another 30.
Agreed.
Agreed.
