Waiting For The Postie/Paperboy...

Following on from Brians earlier posting about the late subscription brought back a dark memory.

As a kid I had a paper round. Colin Spikings, at No 16 had the NME delivered every Thursday. It was tucked inside the Express which made it too bulky to deliver.
Removing it I discovered my comedy heroes Monty Python were on the cover. Slipping it back into the bag, I took it home, devoured it and delivered it the next day.
When I went along to collect the paper money on the Friday I was grilled as to why the NME was late. I lied and said that was it's new delivery date. For a few weeks I continued this charade, taking it home, reading it, delivering it the next day. Eventually Mrs Spike went up to the newsagent to 'sort this out for once and for all'.
I was rumbled.
Later, when the paper boy stuffed my copy through the door and ripped the cover, I was livid. All I can do now is apologise to Colin Spikings for my terrible NME behavior.
I'm sorry.
I'm glad to have got that off my chest, it's been weighing me down all these years.

Sounds

As a febrile young punk rocker, I had a slightly different problem.
I would collect my copy of hallowed punk bible sounds - hey, it was, erm, 1981 - before my evening paper round. Thus my delivery was invariably late as I strolled around absorbed by the latest antics of the UK Subs and Cockney Rejects and only occasionally deigning to stick the Scunny Evening Telegraph in the letterbox.

Explains the lack of tips to surfeit of complaints ratio.

my interest in music journalism

began when the paperboy delivered a copy of Disc to my house by mistake - a newspaper, but about music, great cartoons too (J Edward Oliver, anyone?) I was hooked and only quit buying weeklies a few years ago after 25 years of loyal service.

J Edward Oliver

A name I haven't heard in years. I used to enjoy his work in Disc. After a quick Google, I discovered this site.

wow - thanks for that

it's still great - I'd forgotten about him too I'm ashamed to say. I can't remember any of the acts featured in the paper, but I know JEO's stuff really captured my imagination. The neighbour who should have got the issue of Disc actually named their dog Fresco after JEO's dinosaur.
