Wagner, RATM, Widdecombe....Ashley Cole - or genuine?

[For those who can't open it - Ashley Cole wins fans' poll for England Player of The Year.]

Why should this be a surprise?

I haven't watched every game England played in 2010 but I can't think of a more consistent performer. I'd have probably voted for him myself.

Out of interest - who would you have voted for?

Difficult

It's hard to recall anything before the World Cup where everyone was pretty damned ordinary, but James Milner had a good 6 months prior to it - his versatility & graft took him from being an also-ran squad player to become one of the first names on everyone's list.

Gooner speaking

I'm an Arsenal fan who doesn't have much time for Mr Cole, but, even with my red and whte blinkers on, I can see that he's a fine, fine footballer. He was possibly the only England player who played to his potential in South Africa and he certainly performed at a consistently high level whenever he turned out for England last year.

Besides #1: who else would have been a better choice?

Besides #2: would there really have been enough people interested in this poll to have deliberately sabotaged it to ensure that Cheryl's ex won, as your thread title suggests? I doubt it.

Probably

England's only world class player.

No surprise

He's England's best performer by a country mile. He's not faultless, but if every player performed to as close to their capabilities as Ashley consistently does, then we might have a team.

"We"?

Didn't "you" come home from the World Cup as the only undefeated team Fraser...? ;)

0
Red Umpire | 8 February 2011 - 12:56pm

I do

But I haven't missed an England game at Wembley for about 15 years either. So I slip into the "we" quite naturally.

0
Fraser Lewry | 8 February 2011 - 12:58pm

Fair play

In that case you're more of a "we" than I am... I think I've seen the national team in the flesh four times.

Believe me

I'm not proud of it. Watching England is inevitably fraught and generally a crushing disappointment, and I'm no big fan of the new stadium (although it's much better than the old building). I keep telling myself that "this is the last time", but then they'll announce a friendly match against Ghana, and I'll buy a ticket.

Fair

I don't much like him as a human, but he's been England's best player in the last 12 months. Mind you, I would have given the rest a run for their money and I'm useless.

When I read the OP

My initial reaction was exactly as you have posted.

Glad I decided to read down rather than quickly scroll to the end and duplicate your thoughts.

Top player

I am not disputing his qualities as a player: he is an outstanding left back, rarely if ever makes mistakes, 1st choice in his position by a distance (last year - Baines looks closer now). Aside of Frank Lampard and possibly Emile Heskey, is there another England player to provoke as many negative responses (jeers) when he plays?

Given England's totally dismal 2010, it occurred to me that as there was no outstanding candidate* people may have voted tactically as an FU to the FA.

ps I should declare an interest, though unlike most Gooners, I'd have had him back: much better than Clichy.

* By not playing much, Hart and Walcott would have been in with a shout.

Me too

"unlike most Gooners, I'd have had him back"

You and me both, kb.

As to your other point, I think there's all the difference in the world between the bone-heads who boo a player because he's been an arse in his private life and mistreated "the Nation's darling" (©), and those who recognise a more-than-decent footballer when they see one.

Easily the best England player

Not easy to say that about someone who has played for Arsenal and Chelsea as a Spurs fan, but he is, and has been, the best England player. Would be fascinated to hear an argument against it.

Excellent player

Not a particularly nice man.

Gobsmacked

Check out Cole (and Terry's) body language immediately after the goalkeeping mistake versus America.
A winner, and one likely to achieve at a major tournament, would have immediately gone up to the keeper and instilled a 'we can do it' vibe through that individual and the rest of the team.
Cole and Terry (with 180 caps between them!!!!!) look sheepish.....and the rest is (entirely predictable) history.

Keep picking Cole et al, England have NO chance.

Also, wasn't it a Bulgarian winger who ran him ragged in the first game after the debacle of the summer?
The guy only had a left foot and so Cashley kept letting him cut inside from the right so he could use his left foot.
Genius!
But when he executed a last ditch tackle the 'experts' called it world class!

Ashley Cole

He may not have approached Rob Green to gee him up after his error, but none of his team-mates did either. So who would you have picked?

Cole IS currently England's best player. Whether he's a bit of a git off the park is neither here nor there.

Spartacus Mills | 8 February 2011 - 12:37pm

I agree

I think it's part and part of football psychology that players who've made howling errors aren't approached by their team-mates. It just doesn't happen. They know they've screwed up, and they don't need to be told, or comforted, or encouraged. Given the high number of times that a player scoring an own goal seems to head up the other end of the park to score for the right side, it's an approach that seems to have some merit.

Can't comment on what

he's like a person - never met him - but as a footballer, would echo above comments. He has been the most consistent performer for England, never seems to be taken to the cleaners by anyone and is nearly always a pleasure to watch. Like all good footballers, he makes the game look easy. Do not understand why he should be booed by England 'fans' and not others who have had dubious personal track records, never heard Terry being jeered for instance.

0
Francis Barry-Walsh | 8 February 2011 - 12:22pm

Terry

He was booed by the Wembley crowd in the wake of the Wayne Bridge affair.

0
Fraser Lewry | 8 February 2011 - 12:26pm

Good, had

quite forgotten about that. Thinking about it - it's a slow day - wasn't Lampard jeered ? Was that to do with his post 9/11 behaviour or was he caught paddy pantsdown somewhere ?
