Vinyl reissue sites / blogs

Patrick Crowther's picture

Having bought a turntable recently, I am completely immersed in the wonderful world of vinyl.

I would greatly appreciate some info on websites that give details of vinyl reissues. Thanks in advance...

My fave vinyl mail order lot

are Diverse Vinyl which have a good news \ upcoming \ new release section. (Although not always the cheapest prices they have helped me get some prized items)

http://www.diversevinyl.com/

and I go to the Steve Hoffman forums for people reviewing and giving their 2 cents about things on the horizon and just released. yes anoraks but if you want an idea about how a new pressing sounds etc then they are a good info source

Insound

This might be of interest.

It's a US site that specialises in vinyl, with news of upcoming issues and reissues on LP (and 45).

Of the top of my head try

Of the top of my head try Rhino UK, Sundazed and Music On Vinyl, a Dutch label that presses reissues including the recent Dylan mono reissues, good luck.

Music On Vinyl

recently did a lovely job on XTRMNTR double. Rocks like a bastard.

Sundazed can be very variable so seek out reviews. Their 'Dusty In Memphis' is immaculate however. Although I hear that a recent 45rpm version is rather fine

Patrick, I've got rid of

Patrick, I've got rid of loads of vinyl over the last 10 years and yet no matter how good the remastered Supertramp cds are (okay not all of them are top notch)I won't be parting with my Crime/Crisis/EITQM L.P.s!

BIA

I remember a friend inviting me round to hear Breakfast In America in the week it was released - His hi-fi had never sounded so good.

It may not be my favourite Supertramp lp but it was the best sounding!

crime

never surpassed in IMO

Patrick why dont you trawl for vinyl at second hand shops / markets

Oh I'm doing that as well...

But there are some albums that I love so much that the thought of owning a brand new 180g vinyl copy is very appealing.

I just ordered Naturally by JJ Cale for that very reason.

Paco?

Is that you? Sport and Music? Liviu Galbinski? Does that ring a bell?

Err... yes, that's me!

Mars bar, Mars bar...

I have a feeling this is going to lead somewhere interesting!

I steer clear

of Back To Black Vinyl reissues as I can never track down what sourcs they use for their releases. I suspect they might be just mastered from CD. Some firms used to do this, naming no names *cough Simply Vinyl*

In which case you're better off with a decent 2nd hand copy off ebay

I'm wary of reissue vinyl

for that very reason. I have probably bought 100 vinyl albums since becoming re-born early this year, and only one of those is a 180g reissue (Judee Sill, it's bloody good, mind).

I use Music Stack to check availability and pricing

New and used vinyl

from http://www.themusic.com/

Plus loads of gear, because we all know it's a slippery slope from getting out the vinyl to spending loads more on the hardware.

Enjoy.

Fruits de Mer

Check out the tiny and culty fab Fruits de Mer label and website - they do limited run vinyl 7 and 12" specialising in psychedelia, space rock, proggy stuff. A bit like the 70s labels like Charisma - folky/proggy hippiedom. Peace man.

Thnaks twang!

Now that there is a great wee label. Just bought the orange repressing of the 7" Summerisle EP they have done. 4 lovely cover versions of songs from the Wickerman done by a Swedish outfit called Us and Them. Only a fiver!

Really great stuff on their site that I'll be investigating further.

I really appreciate the heads up Twang!
