View From The Workplace Window

David Wright's picture

I'm fortunate enough to sit near a window at work. The view's nothing to write home about;a vast industrial area with man made lakes and empty office outlets. With the recent snowfall though, the view looks more picturesque, the lakes look more natural frozen and last night the sky was a beautiful deep red, against the black silhouttes of seagulls as they hovered above the waste refuge plant, about half a mile away. They're always disturbed by the bin wagons which I see rumble down the road everyday and the noise of the bin wagons takes me back to my few months working on the bins for our local council. I often feel the vibrations on my desk from the larger lorries across the road, as they wait for their loads from the vast sticky label factory opposite our building.
I'll kind of miss the view when I move desk again next year, but that's just the way things are.
What's the view like from your workplace window, if you're lucky enough to have a view like mine?

Snow melting quickly in my back garden...

Lots of mature trees and next doors Victorian villa. It's like a Christmas card actually... sigh.

Work in a Primary school office

so the view of is of our main car park and the grounds in front of it, and from the other window to my left, I look out on an entrance to the school for pupils coming in for break. It's pretty good really although we don't often see snow covering as it is an elf & safety hazard. They do leave it on the fields and allow the kids to play in it sometimes.
In my last job I operated a weighbridge for a recycling company, so my view was mainly of the back of container lorries. Great job though.

Nice

Still looks pretty good to me, nice picture too.

Pretty good

I'm off today but I usually have a good view of St Nicholas Cathedral in Newcastle.

View of my former workplace

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/dc/Bridgewater_Hall_Basi...

This was where I worked for nearly 12 years. The photo is high resolution so I did not post it on here. The offices were attached to the main G-MEX building (the former Central Station) under the large black sloping roof. My office was the one with the window second from the left, overlooking the Bridgewater Hall. The Metrolink runs alongside it.

Had a perfect view of a scene from Cold Feet that was filmed both inside & outside the Bridgewater Hall. The one where James Nesbitt went up in a cherry picker outside Helen Baxendale's "office" with a bunch of roses.

Thanks

Thanks for that, most interesting, I've never been to a gig at the G-MEX, but my brother tells me it's not a bad venue.

Arcade Fire

There tomorrow. Sold out apparently (10,000?) Sadly my days away have cast me adrift from all that. When I were a lad I had to be at every gig, usually going through the figures when the main act were on, although I insisted on doing the YMCA dance when Village People appeared.

School fields and buildings

Children playing, fooling about. Let’s just hope that tomfoolery doesn’t escalate into blind, ugly violence.

If it does

be sure to get your camcorder out, like a responsible citizen.

My office

is higher up than the office across the road. Just yesterday the three girls in that office were showing each other their purchases from La Senza.

I felt like I had woken up in a scene from a 70s sitcom.

I can also see some

great tits from my office window.

*neglects to mention bird feeder on side of garden shed for predictable comic effect*

Did a "cheeky romp" ensue?

It always did for Robin Askwith. Tony Booth never got much "crumpet" as I remember though.

Just as well in the circmustances probably...

0
BernkastelCues | 10 December 2010 - 2:45pm

No unfortunately

And it wasn't the 'romp' that I'm sure some people's imagination was providing. Just three fully clothed women holding up pieces of underwear in front of themselves.

Pleasant distraction all the same!

My view is FROM

that vast sticky paper factory. Looking across at a vast industrial printing factory, I too shared that deep red sunset late yesterday afternoon- Beautiful! In fact made me Google why does sunlight look different at sunrise and sunset. Apparently because the sun is lower in the sky, light passes through more dust particles. Should you be interested :/

Back to work

Dubai

I'm working at the Madinat Jumeirah complex in Dubai today. It's quite strange as they have a Christmas fair happening across the water from where I'm sitting so, the evening air is being currently rent asunder by endless playing of 'Fairytal Of New York', 'Rockin Around The Christmas Tree' and 'Mr Sandman' while Santas elves ring a bell loudly at intervals. You can just about make out a snowman and fake Christmas trees through the trees.

Here is the view from where I am.

Wonderful

Great view, kind of beats mine for sure, although it's another red sunset here tonight which looks quite beautiful, thanks for posting!

David Wright | 10 December 2010 - 4:58pm

Indeed

And don't forget the old saying: "red sky at night", Shepherd's delight, red sky in morning, Cornish warning".

Shades of Hitchcocks Rear Window

Across street from apartment block.
They keep different hours to us 9-5 workers.
Have seen no murders yet though.
Could have fodder for thriller though.

Squirrels...

...for the past year the view from my workplace window was the only thing keeping me half sane - the institution I worked for had moved premises in summer 2009 and my room (lone working, but customer based within it) ended up being a mile from the front door. Footfall nosedived, the job more or less ran out. You do a lot of soul searching in such a situation.

Luckily, I had a fabulous view, being on a hillside, over Belfast lough with an enclosed grassy area with trees directly outside the window (like a private garden). I had a squirrel for company and often brought in nuts to leave out for him. Large birds would pop by too. Also a (less frequently seen) fox. The funniest moment was watching two inquisitive geese following the squirrel across the grass - it started slowly then gradually became a trot then a run. The squirrel ending up doing a U turn and running like hell...

I've finally got a transfer (starting next week) but I have - in all seriousness - a whole album's worth of songs written while looking out that window, and all recorded, awaiting final mixes. There's one called 'Squirrel' which features the exquisitely talented and not-at-all-mythical Carol From Luton and The Legendary Andy Roberts on electric guitar.

I have a BBC squirrel documentary on tape (as you do...) - I'll get a friend to soundtrack it with the song and stick it up on youtube sometime soon. Obviously, I'll be sure not to send the link to Andrew Collins...

I am looking across the road

at the Sunlight Chinese and Thai restaurant. Normally in darkness at this time of day, it's a hive of activity, as they appear to be holding their Christmas party. Meanwhile, the lights on the Christmas trees which the parish council supplies to the busineses along the High Street are twinkling, and the sound of laughing children can heard, above the roar of endless lorries passing by.

Secret Squirrel

I agree, you can do a lot of soul searching looking out of the office window and it's been quite beautiful watching the snow fall in the past two weeks.
Would be interested to hear your squirrel song sometime, glad you found some inspiration from your window.

David Wright | 10 December 2010 - 6:09pm

Thanks David...

...if it doesn't break any of Fraser's rules, I'll flag up the youtube vid if/when I get it done (technically not up to much outside of MS Office myself). Sort of sounds like Sandy Denny fronting The Who. Saying which is probably just asking for trouble... :-)

But you're right about snow - concentrates the mind, and was falling last January when I had a whole week of solitary soul-searchery with just the view and the Squirrel and a convenient guitar...

Depends where I sit in the house

Our garden in the Tyne Valley, or our neighbours gardens, or some woodland - a very lovely spot (we're very lucky - I'm at the geeky end of the spectrum so I can sort of work anywhere and here will definitely do)

If I go into the office to work it varies depending on where I grab a desk but the view is of the Central station, the bridges, Gateshead (the car park has gone now..) - I bloody love Newcastle

This is a lovely song - "In my office, on the fifth floor, I can see my world pan out beneath me...." - a kind of universal desperation and misguided endeavour and ennui... hey I'm selling it pretty strong - its BEAUTFUL

Downtown Ottawa

I'm halfway up an Ottawa skyscraper, surrounded by more skyscrapers in every direction, so there's not an awful lot to see - although it's quite handy if you want a coffee as within five minutes' walk we have three (three!) Tim Horton's, a Second Cup, two Starbucks, Subway and a deli. If my office was situated about 100ft to the right I would have a pretty good view of Parliament Hill in the distance (but I would also be in midair as our building doesn't go over that far).
