Is it worth seeing? Heard both good and bad things about it.
I tried it again recently
It's truly dreadful. Embarrassing, non-sensical tosh. But that's no reason for you not to give it a go.
It's awful
It's appalling...
...and yet strangely haunting.
Four words
Worst. Music. Film. Ever.
A few more words: how I made it to the end I will never know. Career low point for just about everyone concerned, including the normally excellent Toni Collette. This film was clearly made by someone with ZERO understanding of popular music.
It's making me angry just thinking about it. Damn you Doug!
Iggy Flop
.
I don't know.
I could only watch the first five minutes.
Enjoyed it at the time
I enjoyed it at the time, but it was years ago so difficult to say now. The soundtrack is good.
I would have preferred it if Ewan hadn't "got it out" on screen though. He can't help himself, that one.
Watch it if it doesn't cost you anything!
I wouldn't spend good money on it personally.
I sold my DVD on ebay for a nice profit to someone in Australia, lucky for me as they will be less likely to turn up demanding a refund!
It isn't as bad as
Absolute Beginners
It's pretty bad.
I got a copy for £1.50 which I think is fair. Certainly wouldn't have paid more money for it.
I thought the start was better than the end, where they clearly decided to try and cram in the "rest" of Bowie into about 10 minutes.
Its just a badly thought out film as simple as that. But as Wheaty says, if it doesn't cost you anything, go for it!
Velvet
Sh*temine.
The Voice of Dissent
I suspect I may be in a minority here, but I actually thought it was quite wonderful in parts: when the Christian Bale character witnesses a Bowie/Ronson fellatio-esque moment on TOTP as his old man castigates the performance, Bale shouts "But that's me!", only to cut to Bale glowering as his dad goes on, the opening credits with a mad teenage rush to "Needle In The Camel's Eye", Thom Yorke's Ferry impersonations, and Shudder to Think's even-better-than-the-real-thing glam approximations.
Besides, Todd Haynes captured just how much of a betrayal Bowie fans felt circa his David Bowie Straight Rolling Stone cover. That said, I saw in the good company of Sub Pop rawkers The Black Halos, and when Ewan McG popped out of a chimney in a pair of Pan pants, there was a palpable five-man shrug. Not a failure in my book, but a very individual vision of memories we collectively share.
Any film with Brian Molko as Marc Bolan was always gonna be cack
I had high hopes for this movie when seeing it at the flicks for the first time. The impressive opening sequence showing hordes of teenage girls running in their platform shows to a Bowie gig whilst Eno's Needle In The Camel's Eye played on the soundtrack promised much and made me think I was about to watch a classic rock movie.
I'm not sure what went wrong, but this film was so bad in so many ways.
Saying that, it was still much better than Absoloute Beginners
