Van-type peaks
I'm making up a mixtape themed on Northern Ireland to celebrate my Dad's 70th. So far I've got some artists (Undertones, Divine Comedy, Ash, Cashier No9, Two Door Cinema Club, SLF etc) a few songs about NI (Belfast by Boney M & by Orbital, Shankill Butchers by the Decemberists) and a couple of cryptics ('Down Down', Tyrone Taylor, maybe something from the album 'George Best').
But what about Van Morrison? I hardly know any Van beyond Moondance or Into the Mystic. I always hear mention of these wonderful sentimental songs about Belfast but I've never actually heard one and wouldn't know where to find one amongst the otherwise annoying burbleage. Can anyone recommend something? (of course you can - you're the Massive)
Any other suggestions would obviously be welcome. My Dad'll never actually hear this mix, favouring as he does Jimmy Nail. My brother and sister will hopefully a)enjoy the tunes and b)struggle to name the theme until about track #4.

Off the T of my H...
Star Of The County Down (off Into The Music)
Cyprus Avenue (astral weeks)
Hyndford Street (off Hymns To The Silence)
Cleaning Windows
Coney Island (off Enlightenment I think) - this might be a good one as it references lots of Belfast area landmarks rather than just one small neighbourhood
I'm sure there's more...
Thanks Stimp
That's just perfect
Fear of the Van Police precludes me from posting a link
but here's a pretty accurate cover, although, needless to say Van's rendering beats it out for me.
Fair moves me to tears it does
'Coney Island'
is on "Avalon Sunset".
Not Van...
.....but I've always liked Bap Kennedy.
depends if you want a
depends if you want a fantastic van morrison or something obviously n-ireland related- one irish rover, or I'll tell me ma would both do that.

Ooeer. Time to deny
Ooeer. Time to deny everything and hastily don a stick on moustache (which never sticks on top my real bit of stubble so will probably end up somewhere just below my adams apple.)
Not even any Van stuff on Youtube
It's only a matter of time before the VP discover Bittorrent...
Is that why it's almost
Is that why it's almost impossible to get THEM on cd without spending silly money? Oh to still have my vinyl.
A shame though, because my favourite story (possibly untrue), is that a couple wrote to Van to use some of his music at there wedding, not only did he say yes but he turned up at the church. I think that's lovely and I want it to be true.
Yup... S'troo. Stogumber in Somerset back in 1990
Amazingly it was booted :-)

Artist Suggestions
Henry McCullogh is from NI - his solo on Wings' 'My Love' is pretty darn good (albeit quite brief)
Other guitaring NI people you may wish to consider:
Gary Moore
Eric Bell
Seek out the eponymous Ernie Graham album too.
No one will know who it is, but they'll like him anyway.
snow patrol have an northern
snow patrol have an northern irish link (2 of them I think)
Unfortunately Snow Patrol don't qualify
... falling foul of rule #1 (be any good)
not even ermmmmm
well, that one with the video that kept re setting itself, caught in some kind of loop was quite good, though thats obviously the video thats stuck in my mind. Im sure if you found a way of showing the live8 moment that would put anyone off drugs for a long time.
(and i quite like shut your eyes, but that's probably more about invoked memories to be honest.)
james Galway too. I think im
james Galway too.
I think im out now though.
Im guessing give ireland back to the irish et al arent really what you're after.
Rory
A track from "Irish Tour 74" ? Not sure which tracks were recorded in Belfast but it's all brilliant. It was a troubled time but Rory never missed playing there and was loved for it.
Orangefield
from the Avalon Sunset album. The old grump gets misty-eyed about his time at Orangefield school. Check out the magnificent plank-spanking

A Van Classic
I'd like to suggest Dweller On The Threshold off the Beautiful Vision album. It could be a threshold in Belfast. Or anywhere.
However its Northern Irish quotient is extended in that former Hizbollah hostage, Belfast born Brian Keenan picked it as a choice on Desert Island Discs because he and John McCarthy were given a copy of Beautiful Vision by their captors and it was the only entertainment they had.
This version is recorded at the Grand Opera House, Belfast.
have you got any Duke Special on it?
I'm very fond of this
That mention of Bap Kennedy
Reminds me that you could include Belfast by Energy Orchard his original band.
Not Forgetting
Gary Moore + you got a The Van Morrison & The Chieftans album (with music for all the traditions!) Duck for Cover!!!!
Not Forgetting
Sorry must have hit the repeater button!
You could include
the infamous Van Morrison 'Anal cleft' HORA as a hidden bonus track. Your dad will love it.
