Van doors
Posted by stimpy on 18 October 2010 - 3:59pm.
I had cause to drive a van over the weekend and it suddenly struck me that you never see vans with sliding drivers' doors any more.
I presume they've been 'elfandsafetied' out of existence but, on a warm day there was nothing finer than chugging round in a Transit with the slidey doors open
Mind you, in most cases, you had to watch any protruding limbs when the brakes were applied as the door would inevitably slide shut.

The Sweeney....
Always had sliding doors on a blag back in the old days.
Have sliding doors really been legislated out of existence?
The compulsory wearing of seatbelts would surely prevent comedy fallings-out while negotiating roundabouts, taking sharp turns too fast, etc, so I imagine their disappearance is more likely down to the depressing uniformity of modern vehicle design rather than safety measures to outlaw them.
In the same depressing way that all modern cars seem to resemble each other, one van without sliding passenger doors sells well, so all the other manufacturers rush to copy the style, resulting in the sad demise of slidy doors *bottom lip quivers, has emotional sniff*.
So George Ivan Morrison ...
... isn't teaming up with Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger then?
UPS vans
I am sure they have sliding doors still
How would anyone know?
They always come round when you're at work.
My Oldman
Strangely I could not tell you the reg of any of my cars or motorbikes , however the Bedford van the Oldman had for his building company was 72 UVO and it had sliding doors , we kids were bunged in the back with the tools .

Mazda 5
My Mazda 5 has sliding rear doors - v handy for getting youngsters in and out and not having to worry about hitting the car in the next space. Must admit I was sold on it as soon as I saw the doors.
Same here
Although we bought a Kia. The main selling point was the slidey doors for the very reason you mention.
Yebbut I bet you can't drive along with 'em open
like in the good old days.
Nah, you'd fall aht,
roit in ver middle of va facking rowd.
I once drove a council Transit with a slidey door.
It was odd. You felt almost honour-bound to hang out of it and shout "Awroightdarlin'yerdon'tgetmanyo'themterverpahndcummerean'gisserkissIgotamattressinnerbackifyerwant!" or similar at any female of around reproductive age who came within letching-range. You would then drive away grinning as the female concerned shouted "Sexist pig!" at you. Whilst, of course, secretly feeling flattered. Because, as we know, nothing turns a woman on more than having a stream of barely-coherent invitations to sexual congress howled at her by a spotty youth in a knackered Hampshire County Council Transit van.
hmmm.
Lenny, pictured just before dentistry school...
Disturbingly accurate, that!
Just needs a few more spots.
I think the mark 1 Transit also came pre-fitted with
a folded copy of the Sun tucked under the windscreen on top of the dash.
Van Doors?
I've heard Fergies looking at him to replace Rooney.
Van Doors
I thought maybe that the BEGH had covered some of Jim Morrison's songs. That would be a barrel of laughs.
