Aye..
..they are. Have you heard the new record?
very naughtily
have just lime wired it. I will buy it though. sounds good - great tunes.
The Dave Simpson review..
in Friday's Guardian was very positive. Might wire it too. And then buy it.
Not different enough
It's available streamed from their website at the moment. I listened to it the other day and while I enjoyed it I'm wondering if it's different enough from the debut. It looks like it'll be on emusic next week anyway so at £1.40 it's a no brainer anyway.
I got
Horchata legitimately via their site. It's the first time I've nicked an album for free. I expect to be struck down shortly.
What does "mint" mean
in this context? I've never heard it used like this before.
'Great', 'Really Good', "Excellent"
That sort of thing.
I suspect the OP may be from the North East, where it is quite common.
Thanks
for the explanation.
The OP?
Is from Scunthorpe.
Mint, Ace, Darza. All terms of greatness from the mystical east.
What would you say then?

The first time I head someone say 'mint' in that context...
was about seven years ago, and it was being used by someone who then lived and worked in London.
It was fairly bleedin' obvious what it meant, I must say. I think Mark JF was being a little awkward there...
only *mint*?
not *proper mint*? Disappointing.
Embarrassment saved
Just as well that's been cleared up, I was going to try and serve some vampire weekend next time I did a leg of lamb.
Never a good idea to serve adjectives with food.
Especially not if the adjective is 'shit'.
No,
they're not. They're rubbish.
Why?
Explain.
Yodelling...
...has no place in my collection (Oxford Comma), nor does the overly-shrill derivativism of A-Punk. Give me (for example) Battles anyday.
Battles
might have maths and beats, but they don't have tunes or humour.
I beg to differ...
...I've seen Battles live twice and the shows were both tuneful and hilarious. 'People won't be people 'til they hear this sound that's glowing in the dark at the edge of town.' Now, THAT is a TUNE.
Bit of a cliche
But you either love 'em or hate 'em. I'm afraid I fall into the latter camp.
Tracks they should cover....
Blood on the tracks
The sun ain't gonna shine anymore( maybe not correct title-poetic license)
Midnight hour
They're OK
but nothing special: I much prefer old Talking Heads albums. If I was 20 today, though, I suspect I'd love Vampire Weekend and feel ambivalent about Talking Heads.
Vampire Weekend - minty fresh - FACT
They strongly endorse the use of mint. Or something.
But in terms of whether they're any good musically? The answer is sadly no. Preppy uni ivy league drop-outs covering "Graceland" in a modern "indie" style - i.e. angular, half-arsed harmonies, high guitars, thin jeans - no memorable choruses. That's all it is. They bang on about Fela Kuti. And that's about it. Definitely a case of style over substance.
But fear not Mr Drayton. This is a place with an "each to their own" mindset. So feel free to love them. But keep them away from me. Thanks. :D
I beg to differ
Nothing slack about this little beauty.
watched it
felt a bit ill
like MGMT on caffeine pills and E. Horrendous.
Angular? check.
Skinny jeans? check.
slightly out of tune singing? check.
"vintage" t-shirts? check.
high twangy guitars? check.
chorus? no no no - couldn't find it, sorry.
It is literally a fact
Even Hot Chip couldn't mess this up...
Vampire Weekend new album
will take some listening to. On first 2 plays my first impressions are that it is not as good as their debut. It has less guitars, more electro beats and sounds less immediate. It still has very good feel to it though and I expect it will be a grower whereas their first grabbed me as soon as I heard it in Virgin Megastore London - remember that?
One thing though - I am 53 and like Vampire Weekend - this seems to be a crime. Obviously havent been told I can't listen to such stuff. I will wait for the knock at the door!!
Steve
don't give up listening to the new stuff, i'm not too far away behind you at 45, and I fully intend to be listening to the latest hip noo york band in 10 years time
Brilliant
just listening to Contra on their website and it is brilliant taxi cab is a great track not one duff track yet, the ghost of Graceland stalks their music nothing wrong with that, joyous.
Free gig if anyones interested
