V (2009 version)

Doug B's picture

Has anyone seen this series? Is it as good as the Battlestar re-imagining? Saw the first episode last night and was a bit underwelmed. Is it worth persevering with?

0

No

Simply on the grounds that it's just been cancelled. Shame 'cos it started weak but had been starting to improve.

V

I remember being terrified by the original V as a kid; especially the famous birth scene.

Having watched it again, let's just say it hasn't aged well.

The famous birth scene...

... definately not as scary as I remember.

V poor

Nowhere near as good as the original.

Care to expand 5-C

Having watched the original recently, I was shocked at how cheesy and awful it is. However, given that both the original and the new one are very much based in their own time, I don't think it's fair to compare the two. They can be judged on their own I think.

What about Dexter....

Read the books and enjoyed them. Is the tv version worth watching? anyone got an opinion on how it compares to the books.

Dexter on TV highly recommended, but...

... it uses the first book as a jumping-off point, after which the TV version diverges quite widely from the novels as the seasons go on. YMMV as to whether this is a good or bad thing, but season 4 ("The John Lithgow One") is some of the best longform TV I've seen in recent years, despite having squit to do with the books.

In the TV show..

do the children share his tendencies? knowing US TV I thought they would shy away from that.

Not so far...

... though the possibility was played for laughs in Season 5 with baby Harrison (pretty sure that's not a spoiler!)

One of the

best shows on TV IMO. New series starts this week on FX. It pulls off what is a very difficult trick i.e. making the viewer root for a serial killer.

Never read the books.

Love the TV show. Dark, funny, a bit gory but still OK for the squeamish Mrs P.

I wouldn't read too much depth into it but is sure is a cut above most light entertainment. Compelling.

Just finished watching the first series...

...with my sci-fi loving other half and we loved it. I watched the original again just before Christmas and it is really dreadful stuff, albeit partially due to not ageing well.

I like the ambiguity with this one but it is a shame that it has been cancelled and thus won't finish properly. I'd definitely recommend it.

Weird experience.

I was about 12 when the original series was on, and I wasn't allowed to watch it.
I got round this by getting my big brother to give me a blow-by-blow account the day after each episode aired, including the baby scene.
I recently watched one of the original episodes for the first time, and it was the oddest feeling. Somehow my brain had retained this second-hand storytelling version, so it was all completely new and yet incredibly familiar at the same time.
I get the same feeling when I watch Mad Max, which I didn't see until 20 years after forcing my very patient brother to describe every car crash/murder/Antipodean leather-clad hero's act of revenge in minute detail.
It was kind of deja-vu for something I hadn't actually experienced. A sort of pre-ja vu.
