Unworthy DELUXE edition

simontyler's picture

As each new month brings forth another batch of "deluxe Edition" reissues, I cant help but wonder when the bottom of the barrel will be reached. Sure, I love my Deluxe edition of "Live at Sin'e'" and "My Aim is True". I can see the merits of the Whiskeytown and Free DE's, however I'm unsure if Lionel Richie's " Can't Slow Down" really deserves this level of rediscovery and reverence.

how many unworthy deluxe editions are out there.

Yeah, there are only so many

Yeah, there are only so many times you can buy the same album, let's face it?! And there are certainly more and more undeserving albums getting the deluxe edition treatment. It seems to reflect record companies' ever-more desperate attempts to stir interest in long-forgotten, often mediocre, old albums. Having said that, there are many acts, starting with Bruce Springsteen and Prince, who have whole swathes of back catalogue in urgent of some loving care and digitally-remastered attention.

I believe....

that CBS lovingly remastered much, if not all, of Springsteen's 1972 - 1992 back catalogue in 2001. Doesn't stop Tunnel of Love sounding though it was recorded a break in some Wet Wet Wet and Johnny Hates Jazz sessions though...

A lot of these 'deluxe editions'...

...are really not worth the money, I feel. Am I the only person who doesn't ever feel thrilled by the prospect of inferior alternate takes or having both the mono and stereo mixes being the main selling point or these reissues?

Oh, gods.

There's whole bushels of the buggers you could list here. Jive Bunny, Black Lace, Rik Waller, Coldplay, Leona Lewis.

And then there are the bastards that are trying to milk everyone for all they're worth (although it's not necessarily the artist themselves); Elvis, Genesis, Abba. Come on - how many compilations and live albums do you need? I'm sure there's now more of those than there are original albums.

Hmm. think I may start a new thread on the compilation thing.

You do realise it's not compulsory...

... to buy any of these things?

You know that, I know that.

Yet there are still droves of mindless hordes who feel this pap is a *good* idea.

One certainly has to wonder

how many times Love's Forever Changes can be reissued.
