Unplayed iPod Tracks

Just out of interest, how many tracks have you got on your iPod / MP3 player that have a play count of a big fat zero? Rather sadly there are 274 on mine...

I'm trying to rectify that as I've set up a smart playlist containing all the unplayed tracks and am working through them randomly. Current choon: The Tale of Dusty & Pistol Pete by Smashing Pumpkins off Mellon Collie. 1 more down; 273 to go...!

Yes, I did that too

Called it 'Stuff I Never Listen To' - play count less than one - until it was gone.

Smart playlists

I have a few playlists like that. One with play count of less than one and another that has not been played in the last 12 months to try to make sure that I get through listening to most of my collection in a year.

Not so smart playlists

I suspect that iTunes is telling porkies - it says I haven't played 1073 tracks out of 16180, yet included in the 'unplayed' list are all the tracks on the album I've played most in the last month.

Fools.

The end may be nigh

That's what my iPod was doing before it died...

It's a lot more than 274, I can tell you

But thanks for the prompt - I'm now going to spend the rest of the day with my zero counts as background music whilst I work from home.

Background music

Does having a tune on as background music while you're working count as "listening" to it though...? I do that sometimes and find that an hour has passed and I can't recall a single song that's been played in that time. Sure the play count goes up by one, but that's the only purpose served, isn't it?

3022 (Checked items only!)

But then again I've lost my itunes library about 3 times and had to reinstall it, the last time was in august. (I think it may be because I use an external hard drive.)

When I switch checked items only off on the smart playlist, it jumps up to 7061.

Playcount is greater than 0 (checked only) is 1520 which a decent showing in four months or so.

WHO SAYS THERE'S NO GOOD MUSIC OUT THERE?

Out of 12,792 tracks on my PC, as opposed to my iPod, there are (gulp!) 3,752 items I haven't listened to, including various podcasts and a book I downloaded recently. Or to put it another way: a solid 14 days of listening.

There's just so much stuff I want to hear, even if out of interest and only once at that, I just don't know where to find the time. I might pass on all new music in 2008, not buy anything at all and just spend an entire year catching up and savouring what I've already got. Maybe at the end of the year I can buy Word's Top 50 as my crash course on what happened in 2008.

Most Played IPod Tracks

Spurred on by the "furious" debate re Unplayed Ipod Tracks (I've got quide liderally hundreds of the buggers), I took a quick butcher's at the other end of the scale, i.e Top Ten Most Played. Bearing in mind that this is taken straight from the family mac rather than my own personal pod, I wonder can we work out which family member (me/wife/teenage son/11-year-old daughter/possibly all of us to some of them) has been grooving well into the double figures to this lot. From the top then:

Gold Digger by Kanye West
Dreadlocks In Moonlight by Lee Perry
Don't Stop Me Now by Queen
Mardy Bum by Arctic Monkeys
Dreams by The Game
Learn To Fly by Foo Fighters
Fort Worth Blues by Steve Earle
Heard 'Em Say by Kanye West
The Beast In Me by Nick Lowe
Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly

The mind fecking boggles . . .

Top 10

You're right Barney: the unplayed tracks discussion petered out pretty early didn't it...?

Here are my top 10 most played tracks showing the (relatively healthy!) influence of my 9 year old son in a couple of places:

1. American Idiot - Green Day
2. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
3. Somebody Told Me - The Killers
4. Vertigo - U2
5. Blue Monday - New Order
6. If Looks Could Kill - Camera Obscura
7. Behave - Charlotte Hatherley (not sure how this one crept in, much as I like it!)
8. London Calling - The Clash
9. Teenage Kicks - The Undertones
10. A New England - Billy Bragg
