Unlikely & Absurd Musical Connections

Charlie Mingles's picture

What's the connnection between Sue Cook (80's Crimewatch presenter and nemesis of Alan Partridge) and Lou Reed.

Answer: Sue Cook was once married to classical guitarist John Williams who played in the dreadful Sky with Herbie Flowers who famously played the bassline in Walk on the Wild Side.

The more absurd the better.

Boyzone?

Ronan Keating of Boyzone and the drummer in Therapy? are cousins.

In a similar vein....

What's the connection between Brian Moore of the Big Match (whose head looks uncannily like London Planetarium) and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five?

They both recorded with the same backing band...Keith le Blanc, Doug Wimbish and Skip McDonald - aka TACK>HEAD

Sheriff Roscoe P Coltrane

from the Dukes of Hazard (James Best) and the Everly Brothers were first cousins.

Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane (James Best)

can also be linked with lots of other celebrities, by virtue of the fact that he was an acting teacher for decades, instructing - amongst others - Burt Reynolds, Farrah Fawcett, Clint Eastwood, and Quentin Tarantino. (Not a musical link, I know. Just saying...)

Yes, that's certainly interesting ...

however, if you'd revealed that he used to play bass with Cradle of Filth that would be even better.

Charlie Mingles | 25 January 2012 - 5:59pm

No

but he did play occasional electric triangle with Toad The Wet Sprocket

0
illuminatus | 29 January 2012 - 11:32pm

We are rewatching Twin Peaks chez Sprocket.

It seems that Richard Beymer who played Ben Horne was Tony in West Side Story. Not only that but his lover (and the woman he tries to cheat out of the sawmill), Catherine Martel is played by Piper Laurie who was in The Hustler.

OK, actors in "have been in other things" shock but it surprised me no end...

ganglesprocket | 25 January 2012 - 5:55pm

Not forgetting Dr Jacoby

who was played by Russ Tamblyn, AKA Riff in West Side Story.

Helena Handcart | 25 January 2012 - 7:59pm

Did you know that Bob Holness

played the sa...

Oh, never mind.

Holness

Did you hear Rafferty snubbed his funeral? Disgusting.

There is an urban legend that says...

... Mark Feld took his stage name from a former roommate, the erstwhile WHTTLL? star James Bolam. The 'M' became an 'N' and Feld became Marc Bolan.

Allegedly.

similar to the one about the

similar to the one about the lead singer with Sweet being half-brother of mark mcmanus who plays Taggart.

I've been 'impressing' people with that one for years, though I just checked on the obviously infallible wikipedia and apparantly its not true.

They were related though…

Albeit in a foster family sort of way, weren't they?

I can confirm...

...that this one appears to be true. The following is from a piece I wrote for WORD a few years back on celebrity flatmates:

These unlikely lads became flatmates when the then Mark Feld moved into the Lonsdale Road flat Bolam shared with the American actor Riggs O’Hara. Things went rapidly sour when the 17-year-old Feld decided to take (or at least bastardise) Bolam’s surname as his new stage moniker. Flushed with the recent success of the first Likely Lads series, Bolam, nine years Feld’s senior, was mightily displeased. “Mark couldn’t understand why Jimmy was upset,” O’Hara explained to Bolan biographer Mark Paytress. “He always knew he was going to be more famous.”

Do you want to know a secret?

John Lennon, The Quiet One, Thumbs A Loft and Bongo were in a group together?

I'm sure most people know

I'm sure most people know that La Roux's mum is PC June Ackland from The Bill but I mention it here just in case.

0
Charlie Mingles | 26 January 2012 - 12:33pm

Wrong!

Elly Jackson from La Roux's mum is PC June Ackland from The Bill. It's Jamiroquai all over again! [/pedantry]

0
Spartacus Mills | 26 January 2012 - 12:42pm

sorry? are you saying shes

sorry? are you saying shes not? i hadnt heard that.

0
Charlie Mingles | 26 January 2012 - 1:10pm

Or...

Elly Jackson, from the group La Roux, is the daughter of the actor Trudie Goodwin, who used to play PC (later Sergeant) June Ackland in the Bill...

Frank Zappa and Duran Duran?

Warren Cuccurullo spent 4 years (1976-80) as "stunt" guitarist with Zappa's band.

Then, from 1986 - 2001, he was the lead guitarist in Duran Duran.

No, I don't know why either, but I'm guessing he was a tad overqualified for the second job.

0
mojoworking | 26 January 2012 - 1:58pm

A pedant writes...

I think he was never officially the 'stunt guitarist' - that accolade went to Steve Vai, who was also in Frank's band and subsequently rose to the lofty heights of member of 'Whiteh-Snakeh' at the arse end of the eighties.

Not sure exactly what Warren's role was - suspect more of general band member rather than stunt guitar, fine stringsmith though he undoubtedly is/was...

0
oktapod | 26 January 2012 - 3:12pm

Quite right

Warren was simply "the other guitarist" in Zappa's band. As you say, the offical title "stunt guitarist" didn't exist until later when Vai came along.
