Unexpected soundalike

I liked the Tony Christie track on a recent Word CD enough to get his Richard Hawley-produced album, Made In Sheffield.

Bottle of red wine, late night, CD on deck, very nice... but why is that voice so weirdly familiar? And not just from Amarillo and Yellow River.

A second bottle's nearly gone when I suddenly get it. High, reedy tenor, quaver in the voice. It's bloody Jimmy Dale Gilmore. From South Yorkshire to West Texas.. has anyone ever seen them in the same room?

Tony Christie...

..didn't sing "Yellow River," that was Christie the group, led by (I think) Jeff Christie.
I think they lived at 10 Rillington Place.

Jimmie Dale Gilmore.....

And they wonder why the Flatlanders were never popular, despite Joe Ely and Butch Hancock, 2 premier league songsmiths, all ruined by his curdled marshmallow vocals. Jeepers, I 've tried: sen him live (with the aforementioned Butch)and bought a CD. Unlistenable.

Curdled Marshmallow..??

I thought JDG's voice was the best thing about The Flatlanders. How can you not love this...
