Ugly Bands But Great Music

David Wright's picture

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but isn’t it often the case that the less unglamorous bands and artists produce some of the best music while the good looking and trendy looking artists produce the worst music.

Eg Good= Shane Macgowan And The Pogues (terrible teeth but great songwriter)

Bad= Sugarbabes,, Five Star, Bros etc

I guess what I’m saying is stating the obvious;that manufactured groups often produce the worst music.

I fear

poor old Hot Chip are going to get it once again for being ugly...

Yes...

... and Round and Round by the Sugababes is an absolute classic.

i've always

discarded them on the strength that I can't listen to a band whose main singer looks like Timmy Mallet

Nothing wrong....

with the Sugababes - lots of great songs. Or Girls Aloud for that matter.

Perhaps good looking people often attract the best songwriters...whereas ugly people have to over-compensate by being better songwriters

Depends on your idea of ugly

I used to be friends with a (very attractive)girl who was going out with Shane MacGowan. It was quite surprising how many women fancied him actually, teeth and all.

That aside, Girls Aloud - manufactured and good looking - but fantastic records.

Elvis Presley and The Beatles were responsible for some pretty good records and caused a lot of girls (and boys) to swoon as I recall.

And then there's probably my number one music pin up of all time Debbie Harry - Blondie were a fantastic band.

Nah, I know what you mean, but I think it's a bit too much of a generalisation.

but really...

...Blondie tick both boxes, coz whilst Ms. Harry was fit, the rest of the band were a right bunch of ugs.

I'm at work, so cant look this up.

Also I'm not sure that early camera trickery wasn't involved.

But an older cousin of mine, when a teenager, had a nude picture of Shane MacGowan on her wall.

Picture that and weep.

Proof and disproof

Proof: Motorhead - ugly with great songs
Disproof: Girls Aloud - attractive with great songs

Conclusion: you can't generalise :-)

"Manufactured bands'

Five Star were hardly 'manufactured'. They were siblings. As were two of the three members of Bros (the other was a friend from school.)

Deep Purple. Now there's a 'manufactured' band. Put together by a manager to milk the new 'hard rock' market.
