UFO were really quite special

James Blast's picture

I really like UFO and I've been digging back through their albums via Acnefy™ and Gosh!
Didn't they have a great run of albums from Force It to Making Contact?
Forget the live Strangers in the Night they kicked ass waaaay beyond and 'Tonka' was more than an able replacement for the Kraut.

Check dis!

Sorry to be predictable but..

If it's UFO its got to be this.

It was on the compilation Axe Attack which was one of my crimbo presents about 30 years ago!

For anybody interested I also got TCR (Total Control Racing) the same day , it was a supposedly better version of scalextric where the cars could CHANGE F**KING LANES!.
They could certainly change lanes on xmas eve when I heard my dad and my uncle fitting it and loving every minute of playing it after a few pre xmas day bevvies but it did nothing the following morning.

All I was left with was the aforementioned Axe Attack which included Sammy Hagar and GirlsSchool.
Not that I resent the pair of bastards wrecking my MAIN present at all.

Bah Humbug.

As an Ex-Sounds Reader

I know way more about this band than anyone should. mates of Deaf Barton,Gross Halfwit and Gal Bushell. They always banged on about "Rock Legend" Pete Way in Sounds. then i heard the music and stopped buying it.Each to his own.

Lot of affection for the 'FO

If only because of the vast noise they made the twice I saw them at Newcastle City Hall in 1980 and 81 on the Mechanix and Making Contact tours.

I still have the tour programmes for each - which came in the form of handy calendars. Helpful Heavy Metal.

Yes, I much preferred Paul Chapman too.

First band

I ever saw live back in '78 so still have huge nostalgic appeal for me. I still think 'Strangers..' is an admirable live album, especially songs like "Out in the Street."

Portsmouth

Pretty sure I was there too - Portsmouth Guildhall about 1980 I think.

And about ten years ago as well.

There was only about fifty of us there then, though..

Paul Chapman

He was in Lone Star. Who were good.

I have Strangers In The Night and 2 subsequent albums... which is more than enougth for anyone. I thought what made them stand out was that they used a piano.

If it's got to be one UFO track...

...then for me it's this one:

Saw them twice at Edinburgh Odeon, 1979/80ish; one of which they were supported by Saxon, as I recall.

And "Monkey Puzzle" is a decent album too

Shows that the current line up can still crank out a decent tune or two.

I missed this thread first time round so here's a contribution

Ar...

A time when guitar heroes WERE guitar heroes.

They don't make 'em like that now.

Hang on.. I sound like David Hepworth..
