bit.ly

Go to http://bit.ly where you can enter your URL and have it automatically shortened to only take up 20 characters.

Some Twitter clients (such as Brizzly) do this for you automatically.

I use tweetdeck

and it automatically shortens url's if you copy and paste them into the message. You can also drag them into the message box.

Tweetdeck is very good.

I'm doing most of this from iPhone

Will tweetdeck work with it?

Yep

I use it on my ipod touch - just checked on the web and it does. Its worth a dabble - its free.

Twitter

Twitter is the official iPhone app and is more straightforward to use than Tweetdeck IMO.

Agree

iPhone Tweetdeck is pretty good for following lots of different groups of tweets on the same screen but I find the official Twitter iPhone app to be better for normal useage. Can be a little slow in updating profile details, followers etc.

Both are free.

If anyone's got an Android phone...

then Seesmic is a fabulous Twitter client.
