Twitchhiker

Something for all you twitter fans: Paul Smith, a Newcastle-based journalist, is aiming to travel as far around the world as possible in 30 days (he started on March 1st at Newcastle Central), relying only on the goodwill of people using Twitter, and raising money for charity:water as he goes.

So far he's got the ferry across to Amsterdam, thence to Paris, and now on the way to Frankfurt (I think he's then been offered a flight to New York, from, err, Amsterdam again). He's only allowed to accept offers of travel and accommodation on Twitter, and he can only plan 3 days in advance - hence his somewhat circular progress so far.

Anyway, follow his adventures on http://www.twitchhiker.com/ and @twitchhiker on twitter. It's a great read, particularly last night's soul searching about whether flying to New York is cheating and whether he could get away with murdering the snorer in the next bunk in the hostel.

Ooh, and: what d'you reckon he's got on his iPod?

Why

Do we feel the need to embrace every new internet fad that comes along?Spotify serves a need, but twitter has to be the most pointless waste of time ever.

Apart from

for the guy who was given a free flight to New York, obviously.

Some bloke

tried to do this last year (pre-twitter). He wanted to go round the world using goodwill but only got to France before people didn't trust him so wouldn't help him out. Hopefully this will happen to Paul Smith.

Presumably he's going to write a "best selling" book of his incredible journey.

Anyone who meets him along the way, please tell him from me to "get a job, save up some money and then go round the world"

If I had one of those emoticon thingys now it would definitely be of a little smiley face with eyes rolling.

Ooh, such cynicism

Sure it's a great way to freeload, and sure it doesn't help to point out the worthy 'charidee' work, so I'll not. But, he's a very personable bloke (not met him myself but that's the impression from talking to those that have) who's seeing how far he can get, and writing entertainly about it as he goes. Takes a bit of courage to put yourself in other people's hands to this extent I think.
