Tweeting With The Stars
Posted by DrJ on 2 June 2011 - 9:07pm.
This morning I woke up to find that Wayne Coyne from The Flaming Lips had sent me a DM on Twitter responding to a kind, but dull, tweet I sent his way. Needless to say, I was tickled no end by this correspondence and once again I marvelled at the wonder of Twitter.
Anybody else got any stories of Twitter interactions? A tweet from you idol... or nemesis..?

One of those other magazines started following me
Which is nice.
Frank Sidebottom used to DM his fans
Which was lovely. He responded in the positive to a request for a picture with him at what turned out to be his final public performance, but alas it never happened.
David McAlmont started following me the other week which thrilled me enormously.
Bless him
Frank replied to me a couple of times. And followed me. I am also being followed by the Peter Mannion MP from the "Thick of it"
I have also had a few replies from Clare Balding re "the gee-gees" and Martin Kelner of Fighting Talk fame.
Lenny Law got a reply from Jonathan Agnew during the Ashes, the swine.
*See below, he's forgotten already*
Ooh.. I did, didn't I!
I'd forgotten about that. Proud moment.
I wish
My tweets are protected (a daft combination of using my own name and tweeting lots when I should be working) so there's no point me tweeting people who don't follow me, as they won't see it.
I did unprotect my tweets for a weekend specifically to message Tracey Thorn once. She replied; it made my day.
I should probably leave the house more.
RT
Don't do tweets but Richard Thompson once answered one of my fan boy questions on the Q&A section of his web site. I was one chuffed bunny!
Same here
Alan Wilder (ex Depeche Mode) responded to one of my questions on a website Q&A. I can still see the indifference on my wife's face when I breathlessly told her.
Double whammy
I posted a question on a Fairport forum to which Simon Nicol replied to suggest that I "Ask Richard". So I did.
Bedders
After learning that he had joined Twitter, I started following Mark Bedford (now "semi-retired" from Madness) and he sent me a nice tweet back thanking me for adding him.
Nile Rodgers (or his PA)....
...DM'd me after I wished him well regarding his cancer treatment. "Thanks" was the message. I took a screen shot of it, and will treasure it forever!
I've had a couple.
Matthew Sweet once retweeted something I said to him. Proud me.
Simon Mayo tweeted a daft photo of Sally Boazman and Randy Edelman in response to a smutty suggestion of mine.
And, following a sniffy and sarky exchange of tweets between a few of the Massiveistas regarding Dean Friedman, the man himself pitched up with a wonderfully witty response which raised huzzahs from all around.
Dean Friedman
and Andrew Collins. My only celebrity followers.
Andrew Collins
I noticed this morning that Alexis Petrides put the boot into Andrew Collins for his Word article on the Arctic Monkeys.

I found some Waterboys live stuff on Youtube
which Mike Scott retweeted and thanked me for spotting. Which was nice.
@mickpuck
Has dropped me a couple of notes too. Gentleman.
Not Twitter
but Stewart Lee sent me an email via MySpace before FB and Twitter started thanking me for my praise of his work.
Edwyn Collins wrote on my
Edwyn Collins wrote on my MySpace wall thanking me for adding him.
No-one in the office cared. Philistines.
What's Twitter?
A few
Nile Rodgers (he's most responsive) answered a question I asked about the latest Chic box set.
Pet Shop Boys put me right on an assumption I'd made about their getting a song title wrong.
I've had a couple of nice exchanges with David McAlmont (that man really has his social media strategy under control).
Was a bit irked with a cheap shot made by Tracey Thorn once which resulted in an 'exchange'.
It's fascinating really. I've followed and unfollowed various celebs over the years. The ones that have relatively modest networks, are willing to engage and are witty tend to be the ones that remain. The ones that are too big, don't do it themselves or just tweet promotional stuff or, worse, overshare tend to be unfollowed.
David Quantick
..pulled me up about a negative comment I made about Manchester United.
Have been tweeted by Josh
Have been tweeted by Josh Malina (Will Bailey from The West Wing) whilst watching The West Wing. (Spooky). Ended up having a twitter conversation with him about the making of the episode that I was watching.
Take that special DVD features!
Stars?
Does a DM from David Hepworth count? Well how about from Steve Allen, better known as Enrico Cadillac of Deaf School, who responded to a tweet of mine.
Most followers/messages are Word related and this must be having an impact on the amount of postings on the blog. Struggle to keep up some days. Luckily there is not much to see on the telly. The day I get a response from Danny Baker @prodnose will be the day I shout it from the rooftops. Following Danny is like having a comedy writer loose in your hoose. Also enjoy the Hep's #platterday and the rude #wokeupthismorning offerings from certain sections of The Massive.
Right Said Fred
A Twitter exchange between myself, JoLean and DogFacedBoy about old songs led to a mention of Bernard Cribbens, and I professed my admiration for the sound effects in "Right Said Fred". Seconds later all 3 of us were tweeted by Richard and Fred Fairbrass. They must have some clever software thingy. Slightly spooky in a friendly kind of way.
Yoko Ono and Joe Satriani follow me but that doesn't seem particularly exclusive...
Booker T Jones
Booker T Jones is following me on Twitter. We have discussed our mutual love of Arsenal.
I also correspond with Jesus Jones, but it's not as big a deal.
Sir Alex Ferguson on Twitter
"I don't understand it, to be honest with you. I don't know why anybody can be bothered with that kind of stuff. How do you find the time to do that? There are a million things you can do in your life without that. Get yourself down to the library and read a book. Seriously. It is a waste of time. It seems to have a certain momentum at the moment. Everyone seems to want to do it."
Why, on god's clean, lovely earth
would I take notice of Alex Ferguson's opinion on anything?
Who is Sir Alex Ferguson?
"Who is Sir Alex Ferguson?"
Are you a high court judge?
Not a Tweet but...
...a question* I put to Belle & Sebastian on their website appeared on the inside cover of their CD 'The Life Pursuit'. Unfortunately, as well as being one of their inferior records, I had used a nom de plume so it doesn't seem to be really me.
*relating to the Rolling Stones.
All Twitter slebs who I follow ignore me...
...apart from the not-as-successful-as-they-once-were comedian who berated me following an observation I'd made about their appearing on a panel show alongside another comedian they subsequently went on to publicly criticise. I guess they must search for mentions of their own name, which is pretty sad.
Oh, I did get a DM from Nile Rodgers once, along with everyone else, but then he's a very nice man.
Twitter is sh*t.
As an addendum to my original post...
I got a tweet at the weekend from one of the astronauts on the International Space Station. Just think about that, it's ridiculous.
I've had...
...a nice couple of tweetversations with Tracey Thorn, and an RT from Caitlin Moran, Queen of Twitter. And one other, but I can't remember what it was.
Jonathan Ross
JR once retweeted a comment I'd posted regarding a bloke at work who stated that Kick Ass was written by Jonathan's Mum. My followers went up by about 50 within an hour. Mind you as soon as they realised I didn't know him personally the majority buggered off. Also had a little exchange with Jon Ronson about an episode of This American life where he very helpfully gave me an update on the piece he'd done for them, what a nice man.
I had nothing to contribute here...
Until about a minute ago, when Hank Shocklee started following me on Soundcloud!
