Once upon a time there was a group with a floppy-haired singer, a weird guitarist and an even weirder keyboard player who made a couple of reasonably good pop records and then the weird people buggered off and the rest trudged on for a bit until the floppy-haired singer went solo, enjoying fleeting success doing electro-Vegas cover versions of corny ballads. The end.
When they broke onto "the scene" you couldn't help but sit up and pay attention and today they're still uncommonly fresh to these ears. A tip-top pop group of many albums' standing and, like all the best bands, greater than the sum of their parts, viz 801, Ferry solo and the overlauded overlord of plink-hum.
I agree that at the time, yes, "Virginia Plain" was one of those out-of-nowhere singles that captivated you because it was so different - like "Wuthering Heights" would later in the decade. For me, though, unlike Kate Bush, they never really impressed me all that much after that.
I like all of their albums, though 'Flesh And Blood' is the weakest to my ears. It's the 70s stuff which has aged best though for me. Not terribly interested in Bryan Ferry's solo career.
The Roxy Music Story

Is that a reasonable story treatment?
Not really
When they broke onto "the scene" you couldn't help but sit up and pay attention and today they're still uncommonly fresh to these ears. A tip-top pop group of many albums' standing and, like all the best bands, greater than the sum of their parts, viz 801, Ferry solo and the overlauded overlord of plink-hum.
Virginia Plain, agreed
I agree that at the time, yes, "Virginia Plain" was one of those out-of-nowhere singles that captivated you because it was so different - like "Wuthering Heights" would later in the decade. For me, though, unlike Kate Bush, they never really impressed me all that much after that.
Fair enough
For my part, I've never got Kate Bush. (And if there's any sniggering at the back, it's in your time. I've got all day.)
has someone kicked your dog, Archie?
Is there anything we can do to help?
Well...
...I thought it was funny!
I like all of their albums, though 'Flesh And Blood' is the weakest to my ears. It's the 70s stuff which has aged best though for me. Not terribly interested in Bryan Ferry's solo career.
Wonder if...
there will be anything in there about Byron Ferret auditioning for the lead singer position with King Crimson?
So did...
...Elton John, amazingly!
