Truth or editorialisation?
As a Welshman I reserve the right to not care about football much. I do care about quality reportage though, so I visit the Big Picture website quite often. Their latest collection centres on the World Cup - http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/06/opening_weekend_-_2010_world_c.... - and is packed full of great photographs. I couldn't help but notice though, the one photo that, to quote Sesame Street, wasn't like the other ones. It's number 27. I won't embed the picture as the site is well worth a visit.
Now, why would they pick this photo rather than any of the many others that would show an entirely different take on English fans?
Is this the absolute best shot that summarises the reality of English football fandom?
Or is this a journalistic cheap shot that was designed to confirm the prejudices of football fans around the world?

Not a cheap shot at all
more highlighting this great country's single greatest cultural export of the last half of the last century.
You're suggesting...
That football hooliganism is bigger than The Beatles?
Only in that
I was never _that_ big a fan. Engerlish football hooliganism was always a bit like Eno's take on the Velvets first album. Not a lot of people bought into it but every one of them went out and started little hooligan bands of their own. Just look at what it started. The Dutch have done particularly well out of it.
Bigger than the Beatles
Everybody knows that England's greatest export is the Scotch egg. And before any Scots jump on my case, Scotch Eggs were invented by the London department store, Fortnum & Mason, in 1851.
My apologies
You are, of course, entirely correct.
Prejudice and Ignorance
As far I can see.....
You can get similar photo's at any Philadephia Eagles game.
Really?
Never seen the Eagles play. What then do you think makes Engerlish hooliganism so world famous then? More so than, say, Philly? You think the Engerlish just do it better? Better PR? I think it's their trousers.
I'd imagine
our brand of hooliganism is better known because football/soccer per se is better known world-wide than American football. More countries participate in football from a kick-about in the park through amateur/professional leagues up tp national squads than participate in American football. Therefore as a brand it's better known, like the hooligan element it attracts.
Please don't set him off again.
There's nothing more tiresome than someone with a bee in their bonnet AND a chip on their shoulder. Can we just skip straight to the insults and get it over with?
Gentlemen
Please behave. Read the FAQ. These are precisely the kind of posts we specifically ask you not to contribute.
Thanks.
Yes, well I could see where this was heading from the off
Appropo nothing, can I lighten the mood with this video of some old hippies struggling to adapt to the MTV universe.
I love CSN&Y, but this vid? Well what is there good to say about it.
PS. Sorry ceepee for getting off message. As you were.
Nothin'
cept it is a Welshman, a Canadian and a guy who spent most of his youth in Costa Rica and Panama. But, that's America for you.
Didn't they really only put out about one and a half good albums?
Who is the Welshman?
Are you referring to Graham "The Hash" Nash? Unless I am mistaken he's originally from Blackpool, but turned his nose up at north west England's tropical paradise for a life of hair shirt puritanism in Laurel Canyon. More fool him I say. The donkey rides at Blackpool are unbeatable.
I agree though, their output was inconsistent and sporadic. Much prefer CSN or just Crosby and Nash. The addition of Young just seemed to cause problems.
Blackpool, you say?
Well honestly, outside Zone 4 and my map of Britainland just has dragons and sea monsters and the edge of the earth. But thanks for setting me straight.
Oh, and, the addition of Young did indeed cause problems but Young by himself was always a pretty safe bet.
dragons and sea monsters
..and wales, presumably.
Born in Blackpool...
...brought up in Salford.
Just checking
But was this addressed to me? I had no intention other than a genuine enquiry as to whether or not The Big Picture was justified in choosing that shot. As I said, I'm a regular visitor to their site and have found it to always be thoughtful, considered and balanced. Their choice in this instance seemed strange so I sought the opinions of those whose opinions I have often found to be thoughtful, considered and balanced. Apologies if I've started something I can't finish.
Not at all
If my response had been directed at your post, it would have been over there <----------, aligned to the left of the page.
Phew!
Thought I was in trouble with the Archbeako for a minute.
Meanwhile, over on the
"We Love Nachos!" messageboard they're irate because picture 15 implies that all Mexicans are in prison and/or look like Harvey Keitel.
