TRIVIA Quiz

Just done a great trivia quiz, Here are some of the better questions.
1) What connects Eric Idle,David Coleman,Kevin Rowland and Robert Plant ?
2) What song/tune connects WBA,Wolves and Chelsea ?
3) Name all the groups who have had top ten hits whose names are the same as a Football League club's Nickname ? (for example The Red Devils-Man Utd). careful one of them is difficult.

Well 1. would be

Well 1. would be Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Guessing 2 as One Man Went To Mow.

3. is lost on me. Will hurt to think that hard right now.

Lee Rimmer | 30 July 2008 - 10:02pm

No.3...

Tired, can't think of a Top 10 hit, but The Saints had a Top 40 hit with 'This Perfect Day'.

As they say in Italy... boh.

Patrick Crowther | 30 July 2008 - 10:45pm

Good one

Nice try Patrick. You are on the right lines.
Question 2-the Song/tune was a Top Ten Hit
Question 3
a)Don't have to be Current League clubs but have to have been in the league at one time. This is one i got that the quiz setter didn't.rather proud of myself actually.
b) Think pronunciation rather than spelling for one of the answers.
There are 3 in total.

paul beard | 30 July 2008 - 10:56pm

Can we include Scottish Teams?

If so, The Jags (Partick Thistle) had a hit (possibly Top 10?) with "I've Got Your Number".

Stephen G | 31 July 2008 - 12:08am

q3

Crystal Palace are The Eagles. Did the Eagles have a top 10 hit?
Bristol Rovers are The Pirates as in Shakin' All Over.
Can't think of any more.

Indus | 31 July 2008 - 6:48am

Well done

In this question The Jags are not allowed, but great answer.Never thought of that.
Nice one Indus, In the quiz we said The Pirates and was told NO because it was Johnny Kidd and the Pirates. It had to be the Complete Name, though both of the remaining answers could be contested under this rule, but that's the fun part. But me i'm giving you a point.
The Eagles is Correct -Hotel California got to Number 8

So,at the moment, we have Leedsboy who got question 1 correct.
and Indus who has 2 from 4 in Question 3.
More clues.
Question 2 is an Instrumental
question 3- Think outside the box,Both the groups had Number 1 hits. One Is a Current League club.
the other is a well known club who have fallen on hard times. They famously beat Man Utd in The 70's.Then again, who didn't in the early to mid 70's.
answers this evening

paul beard | 31 July 2008 - 8:46am

The Bees

Brentford.

Have they had a top ten hit?

Niks | 31 July 2008 - 9:11am

Question 2..

Is it 'Liquidator'?
They play it before every game at Stamford Bridge. Do they play it at WBA and Wolves?

FerrisCollier | 31 July 2008 - 9:16am

A Likely Lad indeed

well done Bob and Terry The answer to question 2 is -The Liquidator by Harry J All Stars .
All 3 teams use or have used this song when they run out onto the pitch or just before kick off,. Though Wolves and the Albion dropped it due to the chanting that the fans did along with the tune.
FerrisCollier-are you a Scarborough fan by any chance ?
For an easy bonus point..Which other hit record from the 70's uses the baseline from The Liquidator ?
Not really a video but a chance to enjoy a great tune.

paul beard | 31 July 2008 - 9:48am

Not a Scarborough fan..

I'm a Chelsea supporter!!!

The other hit that uses that bassline is (If You're Ready) Come Go With Me by The Staples Singers. And I think there's another reggae tune that uses it - possibly Rock Steady by Alton Ellis.

Good quiz.

FerrisCollier | 31 July 2008 - 12:29pm

Bob Ferris

Was thinking more of the Wedding episode of the Likely Lads.
Yes you are correct it was the Staple Singers. The other track was Alton Ellis but not Rock Steady because i just played it to check.can't remember the tune though.
Which number 1 song was based on Alton Ellis'- I'm Still In Love With You ?
Update-My brother says it's "Girl I've Got a date" and you know what ? he's right.

paul beard | 31 July 2008 - 4:27pm

I get the Likely Lads

Scarborough reference.
Just to be pedantic I don't think it was the wedding episode, but the one when the banns are read out in church. Terry finally finds out Bob's "mystery" other middle name. "SCARBOROUGH!".
Named as such for the same reason Brooklyn Beckham is so named.

Salty | 31 July 2008 - 5:39pm

'Eezer goode quizmaster

badartdog | 31 July 2008 - 10:08am

Was it the Man Utd clue ?

Impressive badartdog
it is indeed the Sha(y)men. this is the one i got but the quizmaster didn't. Only one to go.
Halifax 2 man Utd 1 Watney cup 1971.
Who are the current holders of the Watney cup ? drifting into football 365 territory but what the hell .

paul beard | 31 July 2008 - 10:30am

The Potters?

Are Stoke City the holders? What am I going on about? Help!

Patrick Crowther | 31 July 2008 - 10:38am

Further footy based musical trivia

How many footballers have had chart hits? Not football teams doing cup songs - there's tonnes of them - but professional, or formerly professional, footballers recording under their own names.

Two I can think of are Gazza doing Lindisfarne's Fog on the Tyne and Diamond Lights by Waddle and Hoddle.

Any more?

Niks | 31 July 2008 - 10:45am

Keggy Keegan

Had a big hit single. Head Over Heels in Love.

Lee Rimmer | 31 July 2008 - 10:53am

Well done again

It is Stoke City(the glory years). The beat Hull 2-0 at the Victoria ground strangely. Being from Stoke and a Valiant i never tire of hearing about it either. Sarcasm ,for non footy people.
How about the Texaco cup ? Not the Irish version.

paul beard | 31 July 2008 - 10:49am

The Keeg

Head over heels. written by members of which group ?

paul beard | 31 July 2008 - 10:52am

Footballers as singers

Vinnie Jones did a version of Wooly Bully i remember. But is he a Footballer ?

paul beard | 31 July 2008 - 10:56am

We are the champions...............

I've got a version of "We are the champions" by Glenn Hoddle on my i-pod. Yes, Glenn Hoddle. It's awful. It only remains on my ipod so i can play it to people who've never heard it so they too can appreciate its awfulness.

Steve Hill | 31 July 2008 - 1:53pm

Never knew Chelsea ran out to The Liquidator

but then again Wolves haven't played at the Bridge much in the past 20 years.
The Liquidator has been the subject of much comment amongst Wolves fans as the club have tried to replace it with various other intro songs. It has been returned to it's rightful place a couple of times but is generally quickly withdrawn because of the foul language that accompanies it's performance.

Ps The Jags song was "Back of My Hand" as in "I've got your number written on the ...."

Salty | 31 July 2008 - 2:51pm

As a Vale fan

Never got to see first Division Football but all my family support Wolves. the first match(1st Div) i saw was Wolves vs Burnley.I was in the North Bank and my biggest memory is hearing everyone clapping and singing to the Liquidator and Frank Casper scoring for Burnley.
Remember the match at Molineux when both Wolves and Chelsea got promoted 76/77 ?.Chelsea fans were banned but the South Bank was full of them.
Back to the quiz. The missing one for question 3
BIg Big clue- try babelfish for the answer.
It's right under your nose

paul beard | 31 July 2008 - 4:36pm

Final clue

The song was a cover version of a famous hit from a film with the same name.
" A little bit of grace is needed"
"I'm Not a sailor"

paul beard | 31 July 2008 - 6:07pm

Aaaargh!!!!

Can't believe I didn't get it!
Of course its the mighty Wolves (or Los Lobos) as we are known in certain parts of Latin America.

Salty | 31 July 2008 - 7:32pm

about time

Thought you might have spotted the common thread.
The answers
