Trashy Rock n' Roll compilations

Patrick Crowther's picture

I've just come across an absolutely fantastic record by The Trashmen called Surfin' Bird, which is just the kind of crazed rock n' roll number that I've always loved.

Can the Massive recommend any currently available compilations which include it and other similarly mental tunes? All suggestions would be gratefully received...

classic track

It was a reworking of another tune, the more doo-wop style "Papa Oom Mow Mow" by The Rivingtons. SB was a big hit in about 1963. There were then numerous other Trashmen singles along the same lines.... "Bird Dance Beat" for example, pretty much the same tune played sideways.

ISTR there's a comp on Ace, "Garage Psychosis" or some such, which includes SB as well as a bunch of other goodies (Sonics etc) and you sure could do worse than starting there!

oh and the Ramones covered it on one of their early LPs

Bird Is The Word!!!!

I was just about to mention...

...the Ramones. The only version I'd heard before is the one on Rocket To Russia.

Tribute

Nobody has so far mentioned what I've always assumed is a tribute to the Trashmen, "Papa Oo Mow Mow" by Gary Glitter. I've just listened to it again on Spotify and it's as bad now as it was when in the 70's.

One of the first records ...

... that I bought myself on the strength of the cover and the word Rockabilly. Very peculiar in places and much loved, until it was stolen at a party, I think because someone wanted Surfin' Bird which we'd just played. I also loved Psycho by the Sonics on that LP - that should be to your taste Patrick.

This is a pretty good compilation.

And I suppose I'll have to be the cliched person who posts a Family Guy clip.

(18,000,000 views for that clip!!)

Also note that the song was used on the Full Metal Jacket soundtrack and is probably the song most people would remember from it after seeing the film.

Why can't you believe it?

There are, after all, lots of songs.

1
Patrick Crowther | 21 May 2010 - 3:00pm

Slightly off the subject, but

Elenore by the Turtles must have the worst/best lyrics of all times!
Practically every line is an awkward gem, the very best one being the line in the chorus that goes;
"...you're my pride and joy, etcetera!"
Makes me crack up every time.

The Cramps

have an equally mental version of Surfin' Bird too, on their Gravest Hits EP.

For trashy 60s garage, bonkersbilly, ramshackle rock'n'roll

etc, try checking out the various volumes of Songs The Cramps Taught Us. They feature scores of original versions of tracks later covered by the Cramps. There's lots to love here.

Here's an Amazon link where you'll find preview clips:

Also, if you've never tried the Cramps, have a delve into their back catalogue too, especially the earlier albums. A great, great band.

I'm jealous

I would LOVE to hear Surfin Bird for the first time again. One of my all time favourites of all time ever. Of all time.

The trouble is, once you start mining this trash-surf-rockabilly-garage genre, it's like (what I can only imagine) a heroin habit (would be like). Everything sounds amazing in very short bursts and nothing else ever sounds the same again.

For me, the prime cuts are:

- Count Five: Psychotic Reaction
- The Sonics: Walkin The Dog (or maybe Have Love Will Travel)
- Link Wray: Rumble
- The Syndicats: Crawdaddy Simone
- Jeff Beck: Beck's Bolero

Maybe I'm wandering off-genre there. But then it's not so much a genre as a vague seam of gonzo rocknroll that runs from about 1959 to 1966.

Great stuff.

A few years back I provided the music for a 7yo's birthday party

just things I thought kids would like and the mother reported back to me that the song they went mental for was Surfin' Bird. Apparently it was played about twelve times in a row. The song has something.

This is a from a Songs The Cramps Taught Us compilation called "Born Bad" The comp is basically music for juvenile delinquents from the late 50's and early 60's.
The song is pure bubblegum but the lyric is about breaking out of jail. It's called Quick Joey Small
