Track #10 on the new cover cd is...
...."Losing You" from Randy Newmans latest cd Harps And Angels.
This is my track of the year!!
It's certainly not party music. In fact, I don't think I could listen to it unless I was on my own. People who know me wouldn't be surprised at my favourite choice....heck, if the cap fits!...
As usual, Randy tells a story which is open to interpretation and leaves us wondering what he is singing about. Is it simply a relationship gone wrong or something much deeper?
On his website there are links on the left which take you to videos on his record labels site(Nonesuch). On the "Losing You" video, he tells us what the song is really about, then plays a solo version of it.
"Feels Like Home" is the last track on Randys cd and it starts with the lyric "There's something in your eyes"....well, after watching the "Losing You" video, there was certainly something in my eye, and a huge lump in my throat!

the Uncut best of 2008 free cd. It's a pretty good round up I reckon - I'm sure the Word's will be better but I ain't heard it yet. Also featured: TV on the Radio, Robert Forster,Felice Bros, the Hold Steady, Bon Iver - no real surprises but all good stuff apart from Jenny Lewis with Elvis Costello. Lewis is her usual sort of bland self, but Elvis is wincingly awful.

He's got to be one of the greatest living songwriters and I think this track is one of the best I've heard this year.
Hats off to Word for featuring the Felice Brothers as well. I've seen them crop up quite prominently in Uncut and Mojo's end of year lists and after living with the latest album (The Felice Brothers) I can see why.
And the new issue of The Word is one of the best of 2008. Here's to 2009.
