Top Toons for the Mandolin..?

Fraser M's picture

Having unexpectedly been gifted a mandolin over the weekend, and having managed to get something verging on the pleasant from it already, I thought I would ask the Massive whether there are any mandolin classics I should now be checking out.

2 Tips

Country: Chris Thile, ex-Nickel Creek

Folk: Simon Mayor

Neither of these pieces are necessarily typical, other than of their virtuosity.

Sheesh!

The guy only got the instrument at the weekend - that's a pretty steep learning curve you've got him on there.

Is Mandolin Wind by the Rodster too obvious?

Or perhaps a nice bluegrass standard, Orange Blossom Special, Blue Moon of Kentucky, Rocky Top, etc. They're pretty much all great.

Zep

The tab for "Battle of Evermore" is readily available on line and easy to play - try that! Otherwise what was that Faces one with John Peel pretending to play mando in it?

This is a handy resource

I too hack about on a mandolin from time to time. Fun eh!

That'll be Maggie May then.

Rod did seem to favour the mandolin at times, as I recall.

Aim high, my daddy always said to me

My "Retro Plays Zappa on Kazoo" is available for purchase soon. (Do you like the snappy title?)

Mando

Go for something easy like Steve Earle's Copperhead Road. Only two chords and an good riff to master. Back in The High Life by Steve Winwood is also worth a shot. Both are in D major.

Losing my Religion is tougher to play than it sounds.

If you want to watch...

Mr. Earle at almost his lowest point(his vacation in the ghetto), here's a video of him doing Copperhead Road on mandolin. There's a little interview first so if you just want the song, skip to about 3.25.

There are a couple of instruction videos for this song on youtube too.

Horslips

Perhaps not the place to start for a learner but how about Mad Pat by Horslips?
