Top North Lincolnshire and East Riding of Yorkshire Bands
Following on from the Irish and Scotish lists, the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph and Hull Daily Mail polled the good people of the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Lincs and asked 'who are your favourite bands?' These are the results:
1) The Housemartins
2) Stephen Fretwell
3) The Beautiful South
4) Carmel
5) The Spiders From Mars
6) Red Guitars
7) Roland Gift
8) Philip Larkin
9) Kingmaker
10) Fila Brasilia
11) Tony Jacklin
12) The Gargoyles
A pretty comprehensive list giving one a good reason to re-locate to the region.

Where are the other three?
I seem to remember when The Housemartins first came out their mission statement, as emblazoned on badges and t shirts etc. was that they were the "Fouth Best Band In Hull". Who were the other three? Why aren't they on the list? Fishy place up there. I smell a cover-up.
other three bands
were The Red Guitars and The Gargoyles (in the list).
and...Everything But the Girl. (seemingly not allowed).
quentin fat boy slim was from brighton but wasn't actually in the housemartins when they were dubbed 4th band. he joined later.
to hull and back
Don't everything but the girl count?
a nifty boundary change avoided York's shed 7 sneaking in.
Lastly surely Larkin should be higher up he was far more rock and roll than Roland Gift, the Morissey of poetry no less.
what next the hot sounds of Hartlepool?
No
Everything bur the Girl were discounted as they were students in Hull and Shed 7 wouldn't be allowed at all as they were shit.
hmmmmmmmmmm
seems arbitary as quentin from housemartins is from brighton, paul heaton from sheff, your right though shed 7 are from planet crud
Relocation to Hull
Yeah, but how many of them still live there?
Salako
They were a good bad from Hull. Anyone remember them?
Blimey...
is that Carmel of Give Me More, More, More fame?
That takes me back - it was one of the first tracks on Now That's What I Call Music Vol. 2
Those were the days when I was young and naive about music. Cracking track, though!
Carmel
Her really big hit was Bad Day, during that phase where everyone pretended to like jazzy stuff. She was from Brigg and not Scunthorpe.
Carmel is great
I would go as far as to say I was a big fan. Hell, I once hitch-hiked from Braunschweig to Bremen to see her in concert, and it was well worth it. In the good old days of Q, someone very astutely described her voice as one that relied more on instinct than technique, and she's certainly an acquired taste. That said, she (or rather, "they", Carmel notionally being the band, not just her) deserved far more success than they ever had in the UK, though very popular in France and Germany.
If you can get hold of Carmel's version of the Miguel Bose song If You Don't Come Back, I think you'll be impressed. She absolutely nails it, getting to the emotional core of the song in a way that some of the young whippersnappers of today could only dream of.
Everything But The Girl do
Everything But The Girl do deserve a mention - they may not have been from Hull but neither were most of the Housemartins.
And what about this glaring omission?

North Lincs
Add to the list Richard Treece (son of Henry, the children's novellist) who came from Barton-upon-Humber but ended up in Help Yourslf, and Ia(i)n (MacDonald) Matthews (yes, he of Fairport Convention), also a Bartonian: he once got his head stuck in the railings outside what is now the Library!
Band Member Accidents
Now there's a thread - which band members have had accidents - head in the railings leads by a nose. I'd nominate Steve Winwood who, aged 11 got his head stuck in a pan. True dat.
I was born in Grimsby...
...and the bass player from Gene went to my school. Ok, without fuss or question, I'll get my coat.
