Top of the Flops

Paul's reference (in the "New Oasis Singer Announced" thread) to Flintlock set me thinking. I'm not sure that the 'Lock hold the dubious honour of being the only act harmed by a Top of the Pops appearance.
Kenny Lynch (yes, that Kenny Lynch) produced a parody of You're the One That I Want by Arthur Mullard & Hilda Baker. Against his advice, they appeared on TotP and gave such a shambling performance that their sales graph line fell off a cliff.
The Funky Moped hitmaker Jasper Carrott has made the same claim about his own appearance on TotP.
And didn't Blue Monday slip in the Fun 40 the week after New Order insisted on performing live?
Any other examples?

You mean THIS TOTP appearance?
It wasn't *that* bad... really...
Indeed
That's a lot better than I remembered it.
Mind you, considering Factory Records lost money on every copy of Blue Monday sold (thanks to the elaborate packaging for its original release), I imagine Tony Wilson had decidedly mixed feelings about its subsequent slide down the chart.
bit of a myth this
only v.few Blue Mondays had the original Saville packaging.
Didn't know that
Another bit of Wilson mythology propagated! I probably should have known better.
I'll shut up now.
Pete Waterman
always claimed The Reynolds Girls fell out of the charts after people saw what they looked like on TOTP
Damaged by TOTP
This one didn't do All About Eve any favours. Still painful to watch all these years later.
The '2
I think this slipped back down the charts once they appeared on TOTP. Fair enough really, not their greatest tune.
Magazine
Shot by Both Sides apparently went down the charts as a result of this appearance:
Devoto was apparently reluctant to appear on the programme miming, hence both his make-up and refusal to move.
The Wildhearts
Back in the 90s, hoary Geordie rockers The Wildhearts finished a TOTP performance by changing the last line of their song to "If you want to hear this next week, then buy the record". The single plummeted in the charts the following week...
The Wedding Present
Every one of their 12 1992 singles dropped in Week 2, despite a number of TOTP appearances. Mind you, they were all limited editions.
Same thing happened to Shut Up And Dance's Raving I'm Raving.
Because
they were rubbish of course and couldn't write a decent tune. There. Someone had to say it.
