Top 40 placings

Steve Hill's picture

I've been looking at http://www.everyhit.com/ which is an excellent U.K. top 40 information site.

Suprising how low in the charts some songs where in retrospect.

Michael Jackson - Thriller No.10
Bob Dylan - Knocking on heavens door - 14
Kate Bush - Hounds of love -18
R.e.m. - Losing my religion -19
Monkees - Last train to clarksville- 23
Prince - Rasberry beret - 25

Would have sworn that all of those were huge hits in their day due to radio play they still recieve.

Also, i know The Beatles released Yesterday and Back In The Ussr years after they split - they only reached 8 and 19 respectively.

I suppose ...

...singles sold so many more copies in those days so anywhere up to mid 20s in chart still represented a substantial hit.

With "Thriller"..

..it was probably because it was the 4th single (I think) released from the album. Mega-budget, major-event promo video notwithstanding.

The only one I'm actually surprised about is The Monkees.
