Tom Ravenscroft

woodface's picture

I have been meaning to write this for a while after hearing a truly dreadful trailer for his show on 6 music. Can we please make it stop? Stop pretending to be thick, stop the 'I don't know what i'm doing' schtick, stop the self depreciation as you have far too much to be modest about. Look, I know who your dad was and I found his act to be just as insincere. I appreciate that I will probably banished from the the word forum forever for holding such views but.....

No you won't (at least not by me).

The only time I ever listened to Peel with anything approaching regularity was when he had a Saturday afternoon show, shortly after the Glorious R1 Revolution of '93. Most of what he played was rubbish, I'm afraid. Oh to have been a listener when he had John Walters to rein him in.

The sole reason his son has a radio career is because he's his son.

Amazingly enough

I don't mind him. He's doing his best Peel, but I can see right through it. Underneath it all I think he's okay.

Perahps I've not heard enough of him to know, but he needs to really find his own style rather than trade off his dad.

Loved John

but that trailer has managed to ensure I never listen to one second of his son's show.

Glad I'm not alone on this,

Glad I'm not alone on this, he might as well be called Tom Peel. Nepotism in media, who'd have thought it eh?

I haven't heard...

...the trailer but I think the show has improved - albeit from a pretty low base - and is now, at least, listenable. As Fuzzy notes, the mixes are good but the whole programme needs more quality control. Although Peel was pretty amateurish at first (I'm old enough to remember the Perfumed Garden on Radio London), I'm not sure that there are many radio stations now that would allow a presenter to learn on air and there are weeks when I would rather time-shift and listen to Gideon Coe's programme

Trailer

Not heard the trailer but his show is excellent. It's got a good mix of beardy and shaved music and the mixes are usually pretty good. Give it a go.

Not heard the trailer but

as fuzzy says above a lot of the 6music trailers are a bit bobbins - in fact a lot of the production type things (you can tell im a radio expert not!) tend to be a bit dated - think Radio 1 in the Fab FM years, which lets down the quality of music and presenters at times. As for Tom Ravenscroft when I have heard him he seems alright, he was big enough to admit when interviewed in the Word a while back that he probably only got the job because of who his Dad was. 6 Music implies it is invoking the spirit of Peel senior so its probably the station cashing in on the family name rather than the presenter. And if he sounds like his old man at times then to be honest I end up sounding like mine. Fortunately for me (and for you to be fair) my dad and i aren't national radio broadcasters.
