Tom Petty European dates are out...

niallb's picture

and it looks like we're travelling. Nothing in the UK (apart from the already announced IOW Festival.) The only weekend dates are Hamburg and Mannheim. This is going to be expensive.

TP at The Empire way back

was possibly the most disappointing gig I have ever been to. Maybe it was my fault as my expectations were beyond high but he was so smug (yes, part of the cool I know) and the crowd so noisy. There we go. Hamburg will be nice in the summer.

He's playing in Dublin

I don't know much by him, but I like his greatest hits and the last few albums. Worth a punt (or 50,000 of them, which by the looks of things, we'll be using in a month or so...)?

Can somebody explain to me....

....how these guys can suddenly generate greater demand despite having not done anything that could be described as a hit in years? Now, I like Tom Petty. Saw him first in 1977 when he was supporting Nils Lofgren. Ever since then he's played dates in the UK and I've never got the impression he was a particularly hot ticket. Certainly can't imagine anyone crossing national frontiers to see him. Now all of a sudden there's a mad scramble for tickets. What makes that happen?

doubt it's the only reason...

...but he hasn't played here (uk) for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages.

That gig at Hammersmith -

Was one of my all time favourite gigs. I've seen an OGWT performance on youtube of Nils which was around the same time also v good. I'm a bit surprised at the demand too. I like him but he hasn't beaten his first album in my view.

Someone makes a splendid four-hour

documentary about him.

I saw that same tour

And as I recall Petty was just starting out. I would guess his star rose to its highest level in UK in 80's and 90's and strangely Full Moon Fever is probably his biggest album here which was a solo album. I think we are living in a time of different hype - its more a case of people wanting to see someone who once had 'legendary' status rather than being in love with their current work good though that may be. Take for example Prince - if he announces another UK tour it is a stone cold cert that it will be a sell-out despite the fact he hasnt done anything of note for a decade at least.

Never made a bad album

could have something to do with it.

And yes, I do include Echo, The Last DJ (Tom does "Wish you were here"), She's the one, & You're gonna get it.

More fans than you might think, and never tours Europe.

She's The One

Great record! It was around that time I got into him.

Could be

that people like going to big gigs these days and there just aren't many people that are good at doing them that people haven't already seen.

Strange tour though - two gigs in Ireland, yet none in mainland England and even some of the European venues seem a bit bizarre.

"some of the European venues seem a bit bizarre"

Well, here's the Stockholm venue, Globen, and I suppose it is a bit bizarre. It's all spherical.

Mainland England??

or Mainland Scotland or Mainland Wales!

There is a 5 day gap in the schedule

before IOW. You gotta think they'd be looking at a couple of UK dates then?

I hope you will be happy

But I saw them last year in Canada and it was distinctly underwhelming, way too laid back and lacking in energy. Not somebody who inspires in large venues. Good music of course.

Royal Albert Hall 20th June.....

.....I did try the search facility "Tom Petty" but couldnt see any mention of this. The band are playing on the 20th June. Tickets on sale this Friday.

I believe top price tickets are £75. Bit pricey but I really want to see the band live. And judging by how often they play the UK this will be my only chance. I did see on the Tom Petty site mention of 2 dates so if the RAH sells out there maybe a 2nd date.

Am I the only one around here who downloads and listens to Petty's Buried Treasure radio show? Think of Dylans Theme Time Radio Hour but without the theme and Petty choosing his fave tracks. Its very good. Petty sounding like some stoned 70's DJ. There's six series of Buried Treasure and i'm halfway through series 4. Very good. Recommended.
