I'm not an expert on B&H but obviously these two wrote some cracking tunes for the Monkees, so presumably they were making a bid to be pop stars in their own right? They look awkward and uncomfortable, they're not particularly ugly men but they're not pretty enough to be an all singing all dancing boy band which is clearly what someone is trying to market them as. Must have been galling to watch other people mime and present your songs better and make bigger hits out of them than you could yourself...presumably the enormous royalty cheques were some consolation.
