Entertainment For Lively Minds
To the forum...and beyond!
Posted by popdoc on 9 October 2008 - 10:15pm.
Just a quick enquiry to the web-gurus.
Would it be possible to insert *track new posts*, *show all posts by me*, *show all replies to posts by me* etc features to the site?
The forum is rather daunting, the sheer volume of posts something I find difficult to get round.
Forgive me if this has been queried before.
Cheers,
Sandy

Oh behave!
this is THIS!
and it's terrible to even attempt to keep up with things
The functions you suggest are all available on Forums that run PHP BBSummaat.
This Word place (here) is way above them, so therefore a complete pain in the hole!
Can someone please sort this shite oot!?

phpBB
In my view phpBB is an awful piece of bloatware. It's terribly inefficient and doesn't integrate well with other software (i.e. it only ever really works as a standalone forum, you can't actually use it to run an entire website). The same is true of most of the forum packages. I like Vanilla a lot, but it doesn't really do what we wanted to achieve here.
There's a 'track' button on everyone's profile page that shows when threads you've started or contributed to have been updated. And if you're absolutely determined to not miss a thing, ever, the RSS feeds are a much more efficient way of keeping up than anything we could do on the website.
Having said that, making things easier to follow online is on my ever-growing to-do list, but comparing what we do here to phpBB or vBulletin or UBB or whatever is not comparing apples with apples. While blogs and forums basically do the same thing (display content), beyond that there are vast differences in in terms of formatting, in terms of integration capabilities, in terms of SEO, and in terms of what we thought would work with Word readers, and work for us.
We get by
By using a combination of "Track"/"New" and entering today's date in the Firefox find-in-page window, you can find your way around without much trouble. We just like moaning about Fraser's Bane once a month or so because we know you'd be disappointed if we didn't.
I'm sorry that was just white noise, Fraser
And I'm not sure it has anything to do with Richard Thompson or "Dumb entertainment" or subscription rates - so should it be on here?
