Entertainment For Lively Minds
This was the week that . . .
Friday already?! Always the best day to take stock - or anything you can get your hands on when the boss isn't looking. Anyway, here are a few random thoughts.
This was the week that . . .
I was *infuriated* by the most stupid comment I've heard in a long time:
"If you can't write about boxing, you can't write"
That was Thomas Hauser plugging his latest boxing book on "Open Book" with Mariella Frostrup. There are plenty of people on this blog alone who can write perfectly well, and I doubt that they share Hauser's obsession with boxing.
I was *bemused* - and entertained - by a thread about the Word cover. Personally, I couldn't care less if the whole cover were red, blue or white; or if there were no cover at all, for that matter. It all reminded me of how disappointed I used to be when buying a CD only to find that the artist had copped out by supplying a 32-page booklet consisting of 31 boring photos, plus the obligatory track list and credits. I prefer to see the lyrics, recording history, critic notes, anything but 31 photos of blokes playing guitars and/or posing thoughtfully.
I was *reminded* that I still haven't taken out my subscription to Word, especially now that there is an offer for overseas subscribers.
(Was 58 pounds, Now 50 pounds). And I nearly pressed on that button, but then I thought the CD is bound to arrive all mangled - never mind the sodding cover! - and that would make me angry. So I decided to wait until the price goes back up again to 58 pounds, then order it anyway.
I was *nonplussed* by a thread about Spotify, and the usual debate about artists' rights, etc. I say nonplussed because I always buy the music if I like it, whether I hear it on Spotify, download it from YouTube or dig out one of my father's old tapes, for that matter.
I was *saddened* to see my 4 x 4 thread slip out of the Top Ten, never to be seen again. Then I thought, "Who cares?" and cheered up immediately.
I was *amazed" to see how many Steely Dan fans there are on this blog. This is a NO, NO group for me, but I'm going to try and make them a NO, YES. Seven Word bloggers can't ALL be wrong, can they?
I was *determined* to post something before I forgot all of the above!

I think
you've missed Hauser's point, which is that boxing is such a great subject for a writer that even those who can't really write would still manage to come up with something readable.
Since we're talking Fridays, may I recommend
"Black Friday" by the mighty Dan as a starting point in your Danular voyage. It's on the fantabulastic Katy Lied album and comes highly recommended.
Thank you, Mark
If there's one thing I just love about this blog, it's all the great music tips I've picked up over the last few weeks. Doesn't mean I like everything that's recommended to me, but it saves an awful lot of time if you know where to start!
I'll report back on Steely. I'm quietly confident on this one :)
Black friday is great
but I double dare you to listen to "Reelin' in the Years" and not think it's the cats pyjamas (then again, you probably know Reelin, so what about "Kid Charlemagne", or "Parkers Band or (goes off to check up on the footie)
Exactly
I take that to mean that boxing is one of those activities which readily lends itself to prose. I can understand that. I'm not a boxing fan myself but I'm sure if I had to write about it I wouldn't have much trouble. Not saying I'd be any good but I think I could get something readable out of it. It's full of all kinds of elements - danger, cruelty, courage, drama, fear etc - that are ripe for writing about. Whereas if I was asked to write about snooker I'd have trouble.
I stand corrected
Johan and David, you are absolutely right! Thank you.
It would depend on which snooker player you had to write about..
there was plenty of danger, cruelty, courage, drama and fear where Alex Higgins was concerned, less so with Graeme "The Pocket Dynamo" Dott.
Dunno
Dotty seems to have had a bit of a time of it since he won the World Championship...

"Dott was diagnosed with depression shortly afterwards, and is now on medication. He supports Rangers."
Not forgetting the sordid 80s
