This site is up it's own British...

bricameron's picture

I think I've been on this site about a Month.I'm British born but live abroad.I buy The Word regularly.I find it intelligent, informative and entertaining.I'm sure people all around the Globe read it, yet when it comes to the blog section it seems to be overrun by a jingoistic bunch of trainspotters who can do no other than argue the merits of the latest Beatles release or whether the Arctic monkeys are the new Oasis. There's a wider world out there and this magazine is failing it's international readership.I'm not sure whether I should keep this site bookmarked or just look in now and again to see how the Brits are doing.(Oh,just the same.)

0

thanks for that,

bri - you have a good day now.

Massives Missives

Not sure....how it's the magazines fault.

It's the massives missives that seem to trouble you.

0
Stuart Graham | 27 August 2009 - 8:19am

Anyone would think

that the Arctic Monkeys have a new album out and the Beatles are having their re-mastered studio work released. And that it's an internet blog where you get out what you put in. Based in the UK.

0
TedLoaf | 27 August 2009 - 8:23am

Other websites are available

0
Gatz | 27 August 2009 - 8:30am

Just a suggestion

I don't mean to sound condascending, but if you feel that way, why not be a bit more constructive? Start some more blogs, contribute to others and add a non-UK perspective to some of the more open ones.

There's a few contributers around from Australia and Spain and they seem to get on just fine.

If something's overly Anglocentric, feel free to ignore it. I don't read and contribute to ever blog. I'm pretty fed up of the frequent prog references seeing as I'm in my early 20s and have never knowingly heard any King Crimson or ELP, so I just let it wash over me.

0
Joe R | 27 August 2009 - 8:35am

Prog. Just take it nice and slowly

Let it creep up on you.

Or do what I did when I was in my 20's - listen to what is current and happening. Enjoy it. Plenty of time for the old stuff later.

0
Beany | 27 August 2009 - 9:59am

I suggest

For Those Who Are About To Die We Salute You, followed by a brisk walk and Heart Of The Sunrise upon return, young man. By the way, has anybody else noticed the price of bicycle pumps these days ?

0
RobertC | 27 August 2009 - 11:23am

Why don't you start some threads about

international / world music?

You might be pleasantly surprised.
This is a broad-church.

0
Adman | 27 August 2009 - 8:37am

Stats

Weirdly enough, the stats are the opposite to what you suggest - the percentage of overall visitors to the website who come from overseas is much higher than the percentage of overseas subscribers to the magazine.

0
Fraser Lewry | 27 August 2009 - 8:47am

Ah, that's because...

It is very expensive to subscribe from here vs buying Word in a shop (admittedly about 6 weeks later, though).

0
Austin | 27 August 2009 - 10:20am

True, dat

But the same applies if we count overseas sales, not just subs.

0
Fraser Lewry | 27 August 2009 - 10:35am

My, I am het -up tonight.

sometimes it just takes a few words of reasoning to gain a full perspective.

0
bricameron | 27 August 2009 - 8:51am

No worries

I've also edited your post title to remove the last word - as I'm sure you know, we ask you to not to use such language in your contributions. Normally I'd let it slide, but in bold letters like that I felt I should remove it.

0
Fraser Lewry | 27 August 2009 - 8:52am

URL

The (not really all that) naughty word is still in the page's URL, if that bothers you at all Fraser...

0
Red Umpire | 27 August 2009 - 10:54am

Not at all

It was it's use in a headline that looked ugly.

0
Fraser Lewry | 27 August 2009 - 10:55am

"up its own british"

anyway sounds like lovely fruity slang.

0
ChaileyJem | 27 August 2009 - 11:10am
stimpy | 27 August 2009 - 1:09pm

'Rinky-dinky doo, rinky-dinky dooh daaah...

Moi ol'man's a dustman

Rinky-dinky doo-daaaah'

You're right... it does.

0
Patrick Crowther | 27 August 2009 - 2:59pm

Its

Not it's - its. Whatever the word was it can't be worse than a misplaced apostrophe;-)

0
Lando Cakes | 27 August 2009 - 7:03pm

Curse my internet unsavviness

I really want to know what the naughty word was and I cant find out... where's the "pages URL"?

0
Sid Williams | 27 August 2009 - 6:10pm

It's in the address bar

Up there. ^

0
Fraser Lewry | 27 August 2009 - 6:17pm

He has a point

I think Bricameron is right - but the Britishness of these threads is what's the fun for me (I'm a German living in Berlin).

Where else would you hear about "celebrities" like Russell Brand, or follow discussions about newspaper articles about "jokes" from people who apparently present a radio show. (A radio show? Do British newspapers write about the presenters of a radio show? Utterly bizzarre!)

Granted, I would like to hear the massive's opinion about world music or krautrock, but even the ISB thread died after a few days...

0
Mychael | 27 August 2009 - 8:50am

Krautrock

This s the pinnacle:

0
Fraser Lewry | 27 August 2009 - 8:55am

Not Amon Duul II?

Archie V's favourites

Think K'rock has come up a number of times on the blog. For example: http://bit.ly/3D3KH0

No reason we can't do it again - and again - of course

0
Sheev | 27 August 2009 - 2:06pm

Negativland surely?

Much more interesting....

0
renkadima | 27 August 2009 - 1:56pm

I know Mychael

a hardy bunch of us tried with the ISB thread but a least we managed to raise enough money to invest in a time-share yurt outside Much Wenlock. You are welcome any time.

0
RobertC | 27 August 2009 - 3:58pm

If you don't like it here...

I'm sure there are similar music-related discussion fora specialising in the music of your adopted country.

On the other hand, you might want to start a thread here and tell us about your local music - you never know, we might be interested.

0
stimpy | 27 August 2009 - 8:58am

Seconded

Start a thread and see what happens Bri. I think you've dismissed the Massive too quickly. The blog has a wide range of topics from Food guilty pleasures to Headphones and it's a great place for getting advice. When i joined the topics ranged from Richard Thompson to Linda Thompson and all things inbetween but it's moved on since then.
I too live abroad but the magazine has never failed me.

0
Sour Crout | 27 August 2009 - 9:53am

Interestingly, of the 5 threads bricameron has started...

Two were specifically about UK artists - Talk Talk and Duncan Jones - one was asking for advice on buying a present and one was the rant to which we're responding.

Hmmm...

0
stimpy | 27 August 2009 - 10:11am

Que?

Que?

0
mattbrammer | 27 August 2009 - 9:04am

Possibly

and why not...........?

0
Lunaman | 27 August 2009 - 9:19am

If he posts....

..blogs like the Shamwow guy he won't get much discussion going!!!

0
Tony Donaghey | 27 August 2009 - 9:23am

Let's talk about April Wine, then

or Glass Tiger, Skinny Puppy, Trans-X, Joni Mitchell, Alannah Myles, The Guess Who, Men Without Hats, Martha & the Muffins or Bryan Adams. Your choice.

Failing that, Degrassi Junior High.

I'm making a Canadian effort here.

0
Five-Centres | 27 August 2009 - 9:38am
Chris G | 27 August 2009 - 9:48am

No, let's talk about...

Rush!

0
Patrick Crowther | 27 August 2009 - 9:51am

Please, Patrick,

not bloody Rush!

How about kd lang?

0
nigelthebald | 27 August 2009 - 9:54am

The Sadies

Best Canadian Band by a country mile

0
James EB | 27 August 2009 - 4:13pm

Anyone heard of

Abba? Could be big.

0
Beany | 27 August 2009 - 9:54am

Is that

the Canadian Abba?

Bloody colonial tribute bands...

0
nigelthebald | 27 August 2009 - 9:58am

No, let's talk about Bare Naked Ladies

(Weren't Young Fresh Fellows Canadians as well?)

0
stimpy | 27 August 2009 - 10:01am

Ok!

My missus & I 'mobbed' the BNL at Glastonbury in 1992. We saw them play the acoustic tent & they were absolutely brilliant. They were charming chaps too. 'Yoko Ono' is still hilarious & 'Brian Wilson' is still heartbreaking. A fine band, great tunes.

0
Adman | 27 August 2009 - 10:09am

Eeeee... April Wine

I saw 'em at the first Donington Monsters Of Rock festival. They were about 6th on the bill and I spent their entire set queueing at the bar.

The only song of theirs I can remember is 'I like to rock' although they did do an *appalling* version of 21st Century Schizoid Man

0
stimpy | 27 August 2009 - 9:53am

While working as Stage Crew

at Reading Uni I spent an entire afternoon helping the drummer polish his hi-hat (oooeeer Mrs) because their performance was going to be broadcast on Rock goes to College. Very (unintentionally?) funny chap, he could have been a minor character in The Mighty Boosh, esp with the shaved hair and leathers.

0
BigJimBob | 27 August 2009 - 10:13am

Entire afternoon?

That's an awful lot of Mr Sheen.

0
Beany | 27 August 2009 - 10:23am

he kept coming back

to check I was doing a good job, and then doing a bit himself.

0
BigJimBob | 27 August 2009 - 10:28am

Concrete Blonde

Never off the radio - when in Canada around '91

Not a cheerful bunch...

0
Sheev | 27 August 2009 - 1:33pm

Tragically Hip

Although I think their last few albums were disappointing, I still like most of the earlier stuff. Alot of their fans didn't like their Music@Work Album where they changed their sound somewhat and experiemented with art rock and prog sounds I thought that was one of their best.

I'm a Canadian and enjoy and have no problems with Word magazine.

0
TheAwesomeSound | 2 September 2009 - 3:03pm

I agree

Just not enough Japanese music and discussion on. Home of karaoke and anime and Endurance. If you think we Brits are barking mad...and I mean that in a nice way.

0
Beany | 27 August 2009 - 10:02am

Boredoms, Flower Travellin' Band

Acid Mothers Temple, Shonen Knife, Boris, boris, DJ Krush, Towa Tei, Buffalo Daughter, Dir En Gray even?

..oh yes, bring it on.

0
James EB | 27 August 2009 - 4:15pm

0

Colonials playing up again?

Colonials playing up again? Jolly bad show. Is it time for tiffin?

0
Andy Lynes | 27 August 2009 - 11:38am

So tell me

Who won the ashes? Earl Grey for me.

0
BigJimBob | 27 August 2009 - 11:43am

To pharaphrase Sid James

"anytime is tiffin time"

wonder what happened to wife no. 6?

0
DogFacedBoy | 27 August 2009 - 12:54pm

Fair point, especially as Fraser says there are...

...a good number of overseas blog contributors. As a magazine, the Observer Music Monthly goes down the road of trying to appeal to a readership with a diverse taste in music and it fails miserably in my opinion.

I think it's unfair to accuse the Blog here as dominated by nasal-gazing anglo's. Natch there is a focus on British media/issues/music etc as that is where most of are from or living. If I lived abroad I'd value this kind of contact with the old country.

0
kb | 27 August 2009 - 3:04pm

I'm more than happy to talk about 'euro music'

Maes Het a'r Gogledd
Domaine de Chapeau et le Nord
Hatt Fält och i Norr
Hut Bereich und im Norden
Campo Cappello e il Nord
El Barret de Camp i al Nord
Pole Kapelusz i Północ

It's all good to me!

0
stimpy | 27 August 2009 - 3:55pm

Que?

:-)

0
Patrick Crowther | 27 August 2009 - 4:15pm

Let's talk about

The Nits then.

0
Mychael | 27 August 2009 - 4:19pm

"Nasal Gazing":

Is that the same as looking down your nose at something...?

0
Graeme Thomson | 27 August 2009 - 3:51pm

Oh, that's good

wish I'd said that.

0
Captain Underpants | 27 August 2009 - 4:09pm

You will

Captain Oscar, you will

The Word is like a stream of bat's piss

0
DogFacedBoy | 27 August 2009 - 4:19pm

I'm British and I live overseas

I don't miss Britain much but I do miss a rib-tickling chinwag with mates about what Shaky Nancy had on her fingers and toes, Robyn Hitchcock's cones, Peter Hammill's early eighties pressed slacks and whatever might have happened to the SFA's tank/armoured car.

Nice to know I've got somewhere online to come to for that kind of thing.

..in defence of the original poster, it is Intelligent Life on Planet Rock. That's Planet, not Plantagenet.

Sorry, it's late here.

0
James EB | 27 August 2009 - 4:48pm

Sir,

The Tantric Lute-Spanker is not received well in my shire, Heaven forfend. There is, however, a comely Gunner's Daughter gladly primed and waiting for his impertinent tuberous embrace. ( Too colonial perchance ? )

0
RobertC | 27 August 2009 - 4:39pm

Sir Jams, the riposte hast wit

The fastening of these trew hast comest all undone. Thou wouldst not wish for this silken hose to fall to the floor?

Arise Sir Mick and get your medieval ya yas out.

I did say it was late..

0
James EB | 27 August 2009 - 4:56pm

Alas, Sir Mick

no longer doth posess his fruitfull ya's ya's. They were nailed to the vestry door of St. Chromatica the Martyed this very morn.

0
RobertC | 27 August 2009 - 5:07pm

0
Captain Underpants | 27 August 2009 - 5:26pm

queues?

Where were the queues to post when there were Swedish / Icelandic playlists flying around??

Nowhere.

But that's ok. Fans of "serious songwriter music" just like to voice their opinion more than others.

That's ok too.

0
badger_king | 27 August 2009 - 6:28pm

By Gad Sir,

you have confounded me. I raise you a braise of freshley potted leverets. Of whom do you ejaculate thus ?

0
RobertC | 27 August 2009 - 6:58pm

I trump you, Sir

with a surfeit of LAMPREYS. Moreover, a musickal DIVERSION by the New Pornographers (a divers and merry band of MINSTRELS of the Colonies).

Jove! 'Tis, as t'were, a LARK most worthy, that wouldst fain amuse even a fine LADY of this parish, I would warrant.

(*creeps into corner and sits holding head and rocking back and forth*)

(has everyone got a drink, by the way?)

0
man.of.soup | 27 August 2009 - 11:01pm

And verily...

It thus came to pass that such good fellows as this should yonder wander o'er hill and vale.

Bring back colonialism and such....

...or not. Whichever.

0
badger_king | 28 August 2009 - 12:33pm

We might be, as you say

But please bear in mind we were helpful enough to chip in to your requests for ideas for a 30th birthday present - still waiting to hear what you picked.

If you want different content here, it is simple to create a blog entry on something in the wide world you are passionate / curious / outraged about : but the place will become the oozlum bird if all we have is threads complaining about the place.

0
el hombre malo | 28 August 2009 - 8:49pm

Didn't nit-picking and bickering...

...sarcasm and p*ss-taking, moaning and harping-on help make this country what it is today? (ahem) Come on bricameron, what else do you expect from a British site populated mainly by blokes who like music?!

0
Olthwaite | 29 August 2009 - 2:33am

Point taken...

am I forgiven?

0
bricameron | 29 August 2009 - 4:46am

Unconditionally

and do try some prog. Early Genesis is a gateway, to Van Der Graaf Generator.

0
RobertC | 29 August 2009 - 8:44am

Of course

Now post some decent threads!

0
Lunaman | 29 August 2009 - 8:50am

Guys, couldn't we just like, love each other, man?

Apologies from other posters acknowledged, gratefully received, but nothwithstanding - how's that for the start of a committee meeting? - could we move on from having a go at contributors here on the basis of being blinkered, old, British, unreceptive etc etc etc?

If you don't like another thread about His Bobness or Pope John Paul George Ringo, ignore it. You haven't paid for it, you don't need to get your money's worth. If you want to be critical of Bob and post accordingly, fine, good debate. If you want to be critical of posters here for liking what we like, that's a bit harsh isn't it?

We are what we is, which demographically I'd guess is largely middle-aged, British and busy and we know what we like. We'd all like to know more about other things, which is why youtube links on here are great, but generally most of us don't have the time or, with kids in tow, the money. So if we're not taking about the latest exciting band, it's not necessarily a character flaw, and if you want to persuade us to take them in by providing evidence, good. And if we still don't like it, that's ok as well.

It just seems a bit odd to criticise Word readers for liking the music that finds its way into Word magazine. Are there currently debates going on within dub circles that read "Why don't any of you guys talk about the majesty of "Brain Salad Surgery"?" I think not.

Ok, group hug. You know you want to.

0
Molesworth | 29 August 2009 - 9:10am

The majesty of Brain Salad Surgery is...

Well YOU started it. OK then, another time.

0
Beany | 29 August 2009 - 9:41am

It's got a terrible 'thin' production

The versions on 'Welcome Back My Friends...' are, statistically, 73.4% better

0
stimpy | 29 August 2009 - 11:19am

Hugging right back at you Molesworth...

Peace out to the Word Massive x
