Entertainment For Lively Minds
This is not just piped music, this is M & S piped music.........
Just got in from a shopping expedition to Kew, after being dragged around M & S by the light looking for clothes we stopped of at the food hall for the usual bits and pieces, parmentier potatoes since you ask. Anyway as we stepped in basket in hand the music system piped out Culture Clubs "Church Of The Poisoned Mind" my mood instantly lifted and obviously I began to sway in time to the harmonica, Boy George and Helen Terry's magisterial pop anthem and sing along under my breath to the lights great annoyance. As we were looking for said potatoes an M & S employee leant over and was also singing along, next to me a man was whistling, it was like a mini flash mob set in a suburban supermarket I swear everyone was suddenly going about their Saturday business with an extra spring in their step, there may have been some muttering from a few but I was in no mood to notice. So to all you 80's naysayers here it is in all it's camp, over produced, extravagant, not a real musician or instrument in sight glory. If this isn't in your head for the rest of the day you're not alive. To those who understand, the revolution continues........

Was it...
... a moment a bit like this, Dave?
Very much so
with my wife being the Martin Freeman character
Potatoes Parmentier.
Why would you want to buy them?
Put a baking tray in a 200deg oven. Chuck in some butter. Peel and dice some spuds into 10mm cubes. Stir them into the hot butter and season. Back into the oven for forty minutes or so. Stir in a handful of chopped parsley. Job's a good 'un.
Because my dear Lenny
I am what is known as a lazy bastard where cooking is concerned and the M&S ones are bloody lovely.
Fair enough..
"You're quite the gourmet
aren't you, Palmer?"
"You didn't come here to talk to me about button mushrooms and birds, did you Sir?"
On the subject of piped music...
has anyone else noticed that B&Q have started to play 'music for pleasure' style cover versions of popular hits of the day? Presumably this is to avoid paying royalties.
Just out of interest, what is the situation with that? I would have thought if it was an issue it would be more about the song rather than the particular record, no? And what kind of sums are involved?
Just interested, like.
It's presumably cheaper somehow
Than playing the original versions, although I'd imagine that B&Q branches (as with other public spaces) will need a PRS license if they play any published music at all in the store, regardless of who actually performs it. Can anyone confirm?
As for "Church of the Poison Mind" then yep, great pop song, especially like that harmonica lick and the wordless vocals middle 8, although it's still all a blatant Motown steal!
They played EC's 'Red Shoes'
when I was last in M&S. Not sure if they had a sale on or it was just for me
