"This is my favourite band Dad..."
Posted by Mousey on 6 January 2010 - 7:36am.
...said my daughter, home for Christmas. So we listened in the car and I was amazed. Interesting tunes, chord progressions - check the bridge at 1.37; slightly off-puttingly camp vocal style etc but essentially this is Good Pop Music according to my definition which means it's got to have some relation to ... um, the HJH.
Anyway this is a band called Of Montreal, I had never heard of them but I bought (ie downloaded from iTunes) the album that this track comes from - released 2004 apparently - they're quite prolific - anyway this is "Eros' Entropic Tundra" by Of Montreal from the album "Satanic Panic in the Attic".
Has anyone else heard of these guys????

Haven't heard much
by them, but you're still lucky. My daughter prefers 'Merry Christmas Everyone' by Shakin' Stevens, on repeat.
Not obscure
I've heard of them and heard them. I like a couple of the singles that have been played on the radio (they're really not that obscure) but over the course of an album I'm not really that keen.
Yeah they can get a bit much
but I LOVE this song.
Can you believe my six-year old
Found these Japanese jazz-funkers on Spotify and has since played the album 'Planet Pimp' to death. So much so we had to order the CD for Xmas for him. So then we've listened to it in the car endlessly too. Apparently much loved by Gilles Peterson, but I'd never heard of them.
Wow, well done your six-year-old!!
Get him/her on the Albert Ayler next...
Yes they are much beloved of Gilles P to the point where they are signed to his Brownswood label here.
Yes!
I have heard of Of Montreal. I first heard them via this track:
I rather like their brand of "strange pop" for want of a better phrase to describe them.
"strange pop"
good description - means it sounds exactly like pop should sound for me!
I know
exactly what you mean.
This did it for me
Bloody great bass. Kids are the future.
WARNING: video contains snow
Thanks for posting that!
Really enjoyed this. A lovely find for a freezing cold afternoon!
Aside from the distinctive whacky pop music,
the other thing that strikes me about this lot is the quality of their album covers.
In a world where CDs have only a 5x5 inch square available as a canvas for the cover art designer, they've really ignored the limitations of the format and allowed their albums to sport graphics of LP sized delightfulness.
Check out the artwork on Amazon. Top marks.
A touch of Sparks
about some of their stuff, which is no bad thing.
I've heard bits and pieces and keep meaning to give them a bit more attention - some of their albums are on emusic - which is the best one to start with?
the aforementioned Satanic Panic is good...
And how timely - they've just announced a guest spot from none other than Beyonce's sister on their next record! http://drownedinsound.com/news/4138771-solange-to-feature-on-of-montreal...
Of Montreal
The band's style has been influenced by not only more conventional indie pop and psychedelic music, but also by vaudeville and music hall on their earlier releases and by afrobeat, funk, krautrock and reggae in their more recent releases.
They are a great band and if you like them..
check out The Dirty Projectors. They plough a similar furrow and are, in my humble opinion, superior.
well as it happens
The Dirty Projectors were the next band on her list!
Interesting.
The nice men at Napster have got plenty of their stuff and it's jolly interesting. Funny scales, odd time signatures, peculiar harmonies. It reminded me of something. And after much headscratching, I rembered. Lilys - Nanny In Manhattan. One of those Levi commercial oneoffs from the '90s. Come in YouTube..
The Lilys
Good forgotten band of the day award. Their album "The Lilys" was an unloved gem. Yes it was straight down the line indie pop, but the songs were well crafted and happy. Plus they took a few listens to get into. I even named my student band after one of their tracks. "The Perception Room" was a great song, and we were an ok christian rock band. Sadly I cannot find a clip to show anyone, but it does exist!
I do also like Of Montreal, I have the "Gay Parade" and "Aldhil's Arboretum" albums. "Nickee Coco" is a fun little song.
But yes, I definitely see the resemblance in the two groups. If that's what you can call them, as both seem to be roving bands of musicians circulating around sole permanent members in a Fall stylee.
