This is the end...My friends
Again, care of radio two (I'm getting to enjoy Stuart Maconie Shows more and more), I heard Frank Wilson's " Do I Love You". Apparently the final song ever played at the Wigan Casino. this got me thinking about venues that had ceased to be and what songs were played at their end.
A quick google and wiki search brought zip!
so I turn to the word blog demographic for examples , if any one knows, what was the last live music to be heard at The Rainbow(NB. not as the Brazilian church!). The various Marquees. The Venue,The Hammersmith Palais, etc etc...

The Fall
were the last band to play at the Hammersmith Palais as far as I know.
I believe there was a vinyl...
...of the last gig at The Rainbow. Same with the Fillmore.
The Old Trout
My favourite venue where I spent many teenage nights was the Old Trout in Windsor which closed in 1995. The last official gig was on the 27th May 1995 by We Know Where You Live, a project featuring members of the Wonderstuff and Eat. Naturally, it sold out. It was quite apt because Eat (a much underated band)seemed to play there every month. The last of a thousand sell-out gigs in Windsor's only real alternative place to go. It cost over a million pounds to wreck the Old Trout and create the Fort and Firkin. Cheers for that!
As for the last song I can't remember - I was too busy looting.
Old Trout
Great venue. I roadied there a few times. We used to play football in the car park outside, and if I can remember correctly the dressing room was in the kitchen.
The Old Trout is now Brown's
one in a chain of souless cafe bar bistros - damn shame I say.
I remember seeing one of Suede's early shows there (I took my younger sister honestly!)...and the front of the stage was lined with pissed up soldiers from Windsor barracks shouting "oh ducky" and "shut that door Everard" whilst slapping their bottoms with imaginary microphones - it was not amusing in the slightest!
edit: Sorry that didn't come out as ironically as I was meaning - it was damn funny actually.
Old Trout
I liked that combination of fear and excitement when you went to gigs there. Running the gauntlet from the squaddies was part of the fun - I knew I was safe if I could get back across the river to Eton. I saw Suede there as well as Blur, Elastica, Supergrass etc. It really was the place to be during Britopop (although Camden might argue).
The Rainbow
I moved to London at just about the same time as The Rainbow closed, much to my chagrin. I think that the last band to play there was Iron Maiden. This supposition is based on theirs being the name that was left up on the marquee for months after the venue closed. If you know any Iron Maiden fans, ask what they would have played as an encore in the early 80's.
B.I.T.
Or Bolton Institute of Technology. Every Saturday night, where I saw bands such as Magma, Albertos, Stray, Saturnalia & Peter Skellern (only lasted 1 number!). The last song was always the same, Singing In The Rain, to send the weary revellers home happy.
