They Call It Their Classic Song.....But

Photobucket

As you might have heard, before The Verve played "Bittersweet Symphony" at T In The Park, the right honourable Richard Ashcroft announced to the crowd that one day "someone in this crowd will write a classic".
There's no doubting it's a good song, but is it a classic? It would be nothing without the strings (and we all know where they came from) and it really needs another chord change somewhere and a middle eight. If these changes were made, I may just consider it to be a classic.
What other songs regarded as classics vex you, what changes would you make before you could consider it a classic.
Perhaps a brass line in "Hey Jude", maybe Phil Collins should have duetted with Kate Bush on "In The Air Tonight"

On Spanish TV. . .

"Bittersweet Symphony" was used for a long time as the continuity ident to kill dead time between programmes, looped so they could fade in and out at will. That just about sums it up for me.

The constant announcements from Richard Ashcroft

of his own genius are becoming quite tiresome.
We know who the great artists are and they don't spend their time on stage telling us.....they spend their time performing the songs that have made them great.

He is way back in the queue.

To have one classic

is almost a one hit wonder....now if they had had two classics they just might be on the road to getting worthy recognition....I quite like Lucky Man also but its not a classic is it....

His delusion surely proves......

History

Might be his best effort, the lyrics on that are exceptional. Oh except that he used someone else's words that time instead of someone else's music. Good song though.

Love is noise

The new single Love is Noise sounded great at Glastonbury (well, on the telly anyway, I wouldn't go near the place in real life) and made BS sound very pedestrian. Not that I'm saying its a classic or anything, but its got a good beat and I'd give it five.

As to vexing classics, Imagine is the most boring plodathon in popular music history and could only be made listenable by changing the melody, chords, tempo, lyrics and performer.

Verve / Oasis

I was at Glastonbury and watched The Verve but I don't actually remember them doing Bittersweet Symphony! I assume they did though. This Is Music, Love Is Noise and The Drugs Don't Work stick in my mind from their performance.

Oasis "Don't Look Back In Anger" always baffles me. I like a bit of Oasis, but surely it's one of their less interesting songs? Give me "Slide Away" or "D'y'Know What I Mean" over that any day.
