These new ipod thingies
Posted by Diz on 9 March 2009 - 11:05am.
Well I've joined the ipod world having bought a very nice little nano at the weekend. So far so good.
Techie question. What do I need to play it in my car? The car stereo has a connecting "hole" but I'm wondering what cable device I need.
Cheers and looking forward to playing randomiser!

Is the hole
a mini jack socket or a cassette hole?
Mini jack socket
Mini jack socket
i know
its a standard audio cable for my ipod classic - are they 3mm or 3.5mm - can't remember. I got it in Comet. Then set your radio to aux and you're away. Hope this helps.
Look for one
that has a dock connector one end and a 3.5mm plug on the other. Quality is better and it comes out at a constant volume. Here's one -> http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/7963608/iPod-Dock-Connect...

That's definitely the correct method. Depending on your iPod model, some seem to need to have EQ turned off before they sound OK through a car stereo.
This is a good idea
If you find when using the iPod in the car that you get a whining noise along with the music as some will get depending on what car you have, then this is for you.

Whining noise
I just forward past the Robbie Williams track.
Boom. Tsh.
hmmm -
I damaged my first cable and have found i'm getting that whine with my replacement cable - it messes with the volume of some bits too - for example the bass and drums might be crystal clear whilst the singer and guitarist suddenly sound like they're in another room. CDs play fine, radio fine too. Any clues?
Is it
affected when you change gear?
Mine does this too and in my case it's a loose wire, but while I can still get it to work ok with a bit of jiggling [insert joke here, Lee :-)] I'm not gonna take my dash apart to fix it!
Whine
On a serious note, the cable with a dock connector appears to let less interference in. I don't get any whine on mine and the sound quality is noticeably better than on my Belkin FM thingy (which is good enough but not as good as a decent cable).
iTrip
alternatively, if you don't want to faff with wires, an iTrip might be the way to go (do they do them for nano? smeg knows - get a proper iPod with space)
But it transmits a shortwave FM frequency to your car radio, and it works beautifully for me, nothing like crusing round town listening to a 1974 bootleg of Tom Waits live at Ebbet's Field. Top notch.
