These charming Smiths remasters

DogFacedBoy's picture

I had a listen to mp3s of the remasters of the Smiths catalogue yesterday and can't say that I like them.

They were HQ mp3s and I was comparing them to the mp3s and the vinyl I got with the Rhino vinyl reissues from a couple of years back. These were also said to have been sprinkled with fairy dust by J Marr and his pal and to my ears were an improvement on the old CDs.

However these new remasters for the incomplete "Complete" box seem to had the life sucked out of them. Mozza's voice is much too far forward in the mix to the detriment of the backing. There is a feeling, however bogus, on Smiths records of a band in a room but these new mixes are claustrophobic and suffocating the songs.

This isn't the traditional remasters moan about them not sounding any different and it being a rip off, its that they do sound different, its just I don't like what they've done.

Anyone else have any opinion of them *hides while Andrew Harrison opens a can of whuppass for me*

I love them

Especially the first album remaster. I always thought the production on the album was muddy and I like the fact that it is much clearer. The CD boxset has reminded me just how very special the band was. I could listen to them on a spotty 12 year olds mobile phone and still get a buzz from those songs.

confused,

if you are comparing them with the mp3's/vinyl from Rhino 2 or 3 years ago then you are comparing them with the same versions. The whole lot was remastered when 'sound of the smiths' came out with some vinyl versions by Rhino.
To my ears they sound brilliant and I agree with LeedsBoy, they always will.

Well

they they simply don't sound the same. The ones from the Complete set sound lifeless in comparison. Ah well, I'll stick with what I got.

Don't agree with .

you DFB.
I invested a few sovs in the cd box and, Hatful of Hollow especially, sounds a lot better and, whilst I'm not an obsessive about these things, the sound on all of them seems a lot clearer and I hear things which never came across before. Apart from anything else, they have reminded me just how brilliant they were and the old cds have been passed onto niece. Thankyou Andrew Harrison for persuading me at the last mingle, not that I needed much of a push.

It's funny

how remastering isn't always guaranteed to sound like an improvement to some people whereas for others it's a revelation.

I know some people who can't tell the difference between a remastered album and the original.
