There is more to South African music, honest
Posted by Doods on 12 June 2010 - 9:25pm.
While those vuvuzelas are giving me a migraine and tinnitus I remind myself that there is more to South Africa's musical horizons than the sound of bees.
The mighty Mahlathini & Mahotella Queens for example:
and the glorious Miriam Makeba
There, I feel better already.

Miriam Makeba
'When I've passed on' (live at the Lincoln Center) is truly a performance
everyone should experience at least once in their life.
Unfortunately it's not up on youtube but you can find it on itunes.
"Maraba Start 500" - The Boyoyo Boys
(Their track "Puleng" formed the backbone of McLaren's "Double Dutch").
any
thrash or industrial?
what about white trash rap?

Jimbo
Don't forget Johnny Clegg...
Some of the most powerful music to come out of South Africa.
Seriously
wouldn't it be good to hear this kind of music instead of the B flat drone OR The Great Escape:
abdullah ibrahim - MANNENBERG
GLORIOUS , UPLIFTING
AND WHEN IT COMES TO JULUKA /JOHNNY CLEGG
Try this

Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony
Right now I'm loving the soundtrack to the excellent documentary on music's role in the struggle against apartheid, "Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303297/).
Lots of variety, and all of it spirited, life-affirming stuff: http://bit.ly/9q5TjI
