Phew, harmony restored
:)
Just reading
James Nice's huge new tome about Factory. Made me want to dig out the late 80s stuff which I only have on Tape, 'Guitar and Other Machines' and so forth.
Is the Factory book worth getting?
Just read Peter Hook's book and the newish Tony Wilson bio., both of which I enjoyed.
Yes it is
very well written by James Nice who is the custodian of the archives of Factory Benelux/Les Disques De Crepuscule which he issues via the LTM label.
He's done a sterling job and it is a very comprehensive and quite realistic, critical and honest history of the label. Its a hefty tome because he makes a point of telling us what happened to the likes of Stockholm Monsters, Crispy Ambulance, 52nd Street etc as well as the big acts. It's very readable and actually gives you a real feel for the fact that actually Factory got endlessly slagged off by the music press most of the time, a lot of the bands really didn't do very well at all, and it is amazing Factory survived the mid 80s at all. Like Peter Hook's book it really is quite a grim tale!
Some interesting quotes from Mark Ellen who was clearly quite unimpressed by the Joy Division gigs he saw!
Duritti
I've heard nothing of the D.C. except the song Otis, cos it's on the 24 Hour Party People soundtrack. I think Otis is dead brill and would be keen to explore more. Which album should I go for as a starter?
Sting, if you want an overview ...
...then the Best Of is a good place to start:

There is also an absolute bargain box set that came out last year, which collects most of his albums of the last decade, all for 12 quid: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Durutti-Column-2001-2009/dp/B002T4GX6A/ref=sr_1_...
Personally, I tend to like his later stuff, particularly the 2006 album Keep Breathing(on the box set), but Vini Reilly (1989) is also one of my favourites. He's pretty prolific, so there's lots to explore. Happy Listening.
