Them old Word podcast blues

Several weeks back when heppo, ello & hazza started boasting about how good their new podcast recording process was, I stopped being able to listen to the 'casts on my ARCHOS GMINIXS 202s.

The files arrive on itiunes on my PC perfectly well (although the file info has changed - see below) and they sound great when played on the pc.

When I move them onto the ARCHOS player, they sound like they have been recorded in a wind tunnel with somebody adding very twangy electrical effects. In sort they are unlistenable.

It was always my end of week treat to listen to the podcast on the way home from work on a friday evening as a means of decompressing. Now I cant & quite frankly Mrs Dolly & the little dollies have noticed a difference in me as I am much more grumpy than usual.

For their sake, can anybody shed light on this mystery & help me.

Previously the info on the file that arrived in itunes was:

MPEG1,Layer3
LAME3.97 encoder
128 kbps
44.1 khz

since the introduction of the new recording process, the encoder information remains the same , but other stuff is now:

MPEG2 Layer3
64 kbps
22.5khz

Would this impact the files that are then moved across onto my archos player?

Can anybody suggest a solution?

I've just paged Producer Matt

for his considered expert opinion. Should be here soon(ish).

Good question

I don't know for sure why you're having your problem but maybe it is to do with the reduced sampling rate (44.1 - 22.5) or bit rate (128k - 64k) which will reduce the audio quality but make the files smaller. Is your player expecting 44.1 which is the norm for CDs?

I'm far from an expert in this but I had a similar problem recording one digital source from another - I recorded a 24 bit source directly into 16 bit and had the same wind noise/phasy sound problem and I found out in the end it was the forced conversion of 24 bit to 16 bit. Which is where dithering comes in. How long have you got?

A quick wiki suggests MPEG2 is really a digital broadcast/video standard - why not use MPEG1/MP3?

I'm not sure how you choose mpeg1 over mpeg 2 within itunes

It just automatically changed at the time that the podacst recording techniques changed so i assuming that it is related to what happened at word's end of things?? but clearly not sure.

According to my iTunes

the file encoding changed with the Zepcast. I think Jimmy's dabbling may be to blame.

temporary solution?

If you right-click on the file in Word, and do 'Convert selection to MP3' does that convert it back into a usable format for you?

thanks for suggestion but i dont quite follow

what do you mean when you write "in word" - the microsoft package or the magazine. not sure where i right click on either option...sorry for being dumb

I think

Fantomas probably means 'right-click in iTunes'. This may re-encode the file in a way your player likes.

Yeee Ha!!

the first one has worked.

Genuine thanks to all

And particularly fantomas for suggestion/fraser for interpretation.

The old right click in itunes trick worked a treat & i know have the last 10 weeks podcasts to catch up - something to look forward.

Thanks again for your time and help

Cheers
