Their eyes follow you round the room

This is the trailer for the upcoming U2 movie in 3D.
Has anyone out there ever seen what you might call an enhanced movie or anything that repaid the effort of wearing special glasses or otherwise submitting to temporary humiliation? Share with the group.

Gruff Rhys

Went to see the recent Candylion tour. And yes there they were,my own special glasses. Put them on didnt see anything, took them off normal service resumed. I think I just forgot the mushrooms. My fault.

3rd Rock 3d

there is an episode of 3rd Rock From the Sun in 3D - the DVD even comes with 2 dinky red/green glasses. Watched with and without and made no difference whatsoever. Is it cos I is short sighted maybe?

Watching that...

makes me think 'less is more'.

I saw Jaws 3-D at the cinema. It was rubbish.

Shaky

In 1978 I saw the film Rollercoaster in Sensurround. No glasses, but I do remember the seats shaking. It can't have been good for the building.

That sounds like a remarkably similar experience...

to the one I had watching Motorhead at the Astoria a few years ago.

Patrick Crowther | 23 January 2008 - 9:56am

I saw Rollercoaster and also

Battlestar Galactica in Sensurround - don't remember the film but do remember my flares wobbling.

Good grief! That takes me

Good grief! That takes me back! At least I had an excuse for going, I was only about 12 or 13 but my poor Dad has to sit all the way through - the nearest Sensurround equipped cinema was some way away so he was on taxi duties!!

It's in front of you

This year Aladdin at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle was very strange, it had 3D scenes. Into the cave we went and on went the polarised glasses. Very good it was too, excellent for trying to stop spears hitting you in the face. Sadly, all the effort put into the 3D meant that traditional panto fayre such as gags and routines went out the window.
Not forgetting the sleeve of Off The Bone, the best of Cramps, that came in a very natty 3D sleeve, which still entertains small children to this very day.

Stick it out

Just earlier this week I watched the Blue Harvest episode of Family Guy which has a section in 3D (the DVD came with the appropriate glasses - more than one of them as well).

Also saw the latest Harry Potter film at an IMAX cinema. It had a very impressive climax in 3D which used that fancier version that isn't in red and green.

I used to be obsessed with 3D

I too saw Jaws 3D and the phenomenal(y bad)Spacehunter, Adventures in the Forbidden Zone. The Imax 3D films are quite something though. James Cameron's Titanic documentary was great in 3D.

The 3D IMAX experience it definitely worth it

We took my nephew to see the IMAX 3D movie about the space shuttle a while back which was incredibly impressive visually. But for narrative, dramatic films... frankly I'd rather Hollywood'd spend the extra cash on a decent script writer who might inject a few special effects like "coherent plot", "character development" and "original thought" into their output!

Trevor_Raggatt | 23 January 2008 - 1:34pm

Plot? Character development? Original thought?

You mean EXPLOSIONS and loveless sex aren't enough for you?

I could not agree more.

Patrick Crowther | 23 January 2008 - 4:01pm

Yeah, that's the problem with those Jane Austen adaptions...

...not enough car chases!

Trevor_Raggatt | 24 January 2008 - 2:45pm

Jaws 3D

I saw it at the cinema too. Whenever I catch a bit of it on TV, those lingering shots of protruding spears or frogs jumping towards the camera seem even more pointless than at the cinema.

Fred Dineage!!!

I seem to remember many years ago (late 70s/early 80s) that ITV did an experiment with 3D. The glasses came with the TV Times and the programme was a bit Tomorrows World-ish with things coming out of the screen at you. The I remember is Fred Dineage shaking a rug and the dirt coming out of the set all over your living room, sort of!
